This beginner sewing course takes the creative beginner step by step through proper sewing machine set up and safe machine operation and then efficiently walks them through creating and sewing a nice sized, lined, keepsake bag!

Class experience

This absolute beginner, machine sewing course teaches machine usage, several foundational techniques and ends with them making a customized, keepsake tote, for their supplies, with all of their baby steps displayed right on it!
I started sewing at age 12 and remember the frustrations I had. I built this course to help young beginners navigate through the first steps of learning to sew but in a fun and creative way.

In high school I took a beginner sewing course for a semester but the teacher realized that I was not a beginner, took me aside the whole semester and tutored me personally to fill in the gaps of my self learning.

I've been sewing and have sewed everything from my own clothes, to all of my bridesmaids dresses, to upholstering furniture and making custom costumes.

Supply List Overview (Please see the PDF attached to your learners inbox welcome letter upon enrollment for the full list with photos) 1. Basic sewing machine and its accessories (button hole maker foot, zipper foot etc.) ***I have many parents ask me for machine suggestions. I definitely wouldn't purchase one of the tiny ones that only does a straight stitch even though yes you can sew on them. I always suggest that you purchase a name brand machine just in case your learner doesn't enjoy sewing and you can always offload a name brand easier. Ask around, you may be able to borrow one too for this course. Learners need a basic sewing machine that has these features to be able to complete this course. 🧵 Zigzag foot 🧵 Buttonhole foot 🧵 Straight and zig zag stitches 🧵 Preferably several decorative stitches. 🧵 A manual (digital or printed) Overview of some of the other supplies: Good sharp fabric scissors/shears Small embroidery scissors Machine needles for light and medium weight cotton Plastic or metal bobbins that fit your type of machine 1 yard each: three types of cotton fabric: One solid color and two either contrasting, solid or patterned all in in similar weights 3 yard- Non woven, medium weight, fusible interfacing 42” of canvas strap (for handles) Thread that contrasts your solid color but matches your fabrics (2) 6 inch zippers (contrasting color to the solid color) Sewing needles for hand sewing Several buttons to match or contrast with your fabric. Adult helpers, you may or may not need to assist your learner, with many different things, during this course but try not to do it during the live class time. Outschool’s policy is that only learners are supposed to be on camera, talking and asking questions of the teacher.

There is a lot of work to this course, so you’ll just have to be mindful of what your learner can and cannot handle doing independently, such as using the iron, reading handouts, measuring etc.

Please, also make sure that your learner has a sewing manual available for their particular machine since I've not suggested only one type of machine for this course and they will need to refer to it.

Reading the manual tends to be one of the most dreaded and difficult for many learners but this is crucial for their success to operate their machine. I do suggest that you look through it with them ahead of time.

Allow them to do as much as they possibly can but you’re more than welcome to spend time with them and helping them between classes.

Remember, it's not about completing the bag in record time, as it is learning to properly learn to use their machines.

Parents, I've also built this course for you to use to be able to assess how well your learner is able to function independently and emotionally through a large detailed course and project.

This course will be available for 3 months after the ending date. I know life gets in the way sometimes so just know that that's fine if things get off track. I'm always happy to see bags after the end date!

Nothing more rewarding, as an educator, than to see faces light up with joy after accomplishing something they thought was much too difficult to accomplish!

Sometimes, a learner needs to be gently nudged beyond what they think they can do. Tears...
