Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Sentences are very complex. That is why you need to become a sentence diagramming ninja! We all know, even the simplest of sentences must have a subject and a verb, and grammatical rules dictate how the subject and verb interact. Learning sentence diagramming allows a student to own a process that helps them see how the parts of speech fit together. This is a beneficial tool for those who are visual learners. This class is a great place to review Classical Conversations and First Language Lessons diagramming skills!

Outschoolers will benefit the most from this class if they have a basic understanding of grammar rules (simple subjects, predicates, nouns, verbs, direct and indirect objects, etc.). Students with basic sentence diagramming knowledge may start with this course as a refresher before advancing into complex diagrams.

Learners in this class will receive three weekly mini-diagramming lessons (see schedule below), weekly diagramming challenges, weekly Google Form Quizzes, and will wrap up the course with two specially designed full diagram review sessions! Class cumulates with a Flex Class Diagram Gallary Walk Challenge Sentence- We will show off our group diagramming expertise!

Learning Goals
A sentence diagram is a way to represent the structure of a sentence graphically, showing how words in a sentence function and relate to each other. The process promotes critical thinking, writing, grammar, and editing skills. Kitty Burns Florey sums it up well; "When you diagram a sentence, those things are always in that relation to each other. It always makes the same kind of picture. And supposedly, it makes it easier for kids who are learning to write, learning to use correct English."

Why take on the challenge of sentence diagramming? It allows students to clarify their thinking, fix their sentences, and put grammar to use in a different way. Putting all of the words of a sentence on a diagram enables learners to identify the logical connections between different parts of the sentence. From my own personal teaching experience, learning diagram sentences has allowed an average grammar student to become an exceptional grammar student.

My educational goal is to enable your student to become engaged in grammar. By tapping into your learner's enthusiasm, they are active and engaged in their learning process. I have taught over 4,000 Outschool students, and logged more than 800 Outschool teaching hours, in engaging, educational, and inspiring themed English Language courses. I am a certified Wisconsin K-8th grade teacher. My educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in English, Communications, and Print Media. You will find more about my Outschool teaching journey on various media outlets, including CBS New York, Business Insider, and the American Board for Teacher Excellence.
