Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Intermediate Level
Hi there!

This is a semester-long, one-on-one, private instructional program that will designed to meet the needs of your learner. Since this course will be custom-tailored to your child, parent communication is critical. (Please note that the syllabus required by Outschool is simply an example; I will use the information you supply to create a custom semester-long English language arts class for your learner.)

I’m a certified, licensed English teacher with experience in curriculum design, so I'll create a semester-long course aligned with ELA standards for your learner’s level, yet tailored as much as possible to your child’s interests.

I have experience teaching students at many levels, so I can challenge your gifted or advanced learner, as well as support a student who might be facing academic challenges. I will support your learner by using research-based strategies gained over my years of teaching and continuing education. With your input, I can create a curriculum that is right for your child.

To prepare your learner for the next grade level, an ELA course should feature a well-rounded mix of various types of literature, including nonfiction articles, novels and short stories from various genres, as well as poetry. I do assign reading and writing homework between class sessions.

As we read and write, lessons should include a variety of skills, including vocabulary development, open-ended discussions to promote higher-order thinking skills, and a variety of writing assignments. I will also teach learners how to use graphic organizers and outlines for mapping out their writing, as well as language development, including grammar and punctuation skills.

Developing warm relationships with my students is important, and I use a light touch when interacting with learners. I raised three children of my own, and I understand how much a positive relationship with teachers can encourage our children and build their confidence. I also taught in the classroom for over 22 years in grades 4-9; I also tutored students from a larger age range. I have tutored on Outschool since 2021.

Classes will be scheduled to meet 2 days per week. Regular attendance is critical for your child’s success. I understand that occasionally things come up requiring students to miss class, so I will try to accommodate schedule changes if possible. However, this is sometimes not possible. With 48 hours of advance notice, I will reschedule up to 3 classes per semester. For the Autumn semester, Labor Day and Thanksgiving day are holidays, but I scheduled two days at the end to make up for these two missed classes.

I will need your input to design this course for your learner.
Please share the following:
-Grade level of your learner
-Reading and writing strengths
-Writing samples
-Areas for growth
-Their attitude towards reading and writing
-Interests and hobbies

Please let me know if you have any special book or subject requests. I’m flexible and would be happy to map out a course that is specific to your child’s interests, while also broadening their interests and exposing them to other engaging topics.

~~Please be sure that the schedule you agree to will be something that your learner can attend regularly. I can only reschedule up to THREE sessions per semester, and sometimes this is not possible. Unfortunately, I won't be able to offer refunds for missed classes. I have already built in make-up days for the two U.S. holidays that occur during the semester.~~
