US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this 10 week class, your learner will dive into the world of business! The first 3 weeks explore a basic, draft business plan for a real or imagined business. Weeks 4-10 dive into topics that support a robust business plan like visuals, sustainability, and social media marketing. ** Need a different day/time? Use the auto-schedule feature! ** Week 1: Class introductions; elements of a business plan Week 2: What goes into pricing your product or service Week 3: How personality and strengths/challenges can impact/improve your business Week 4: Social media marketing tools (e.g. Youtube, Instagram) and best practices Week 5: Defining what sustainability means for you and your business Week 6: Speak confidently (practice talking with customers, making conversation) Week 7: Business Visuals Part 1: Design a draft logo (Canva) Week 8: Business Visuals Part 2: Design for social media or flyer (Canva) Week 9: Business Visuals Part 3: Vendor table setup and website costs/tools Week 10: Final learner presentations and teacher/peer feedback This class requires very little materials - just a journal and a notebook. Any worksheets posted in the classroom can be printed OR filled out digitally OR answers jotted in a notebook. The Canva classes require a Canva account (free or paid) and access to Canva on the app or website. Please ensure that your learner can access Canva on a phone or computer, as I cannot troubleshoot Canva log-in issues during class. (Learners can use a different app, or paper/markers, but the tutorial is in Canva.) Homework is assigned, but is optional. If you would like your learner to have accountability for homework, please message me in advance, and I will check in with them periodically via messaging. The final presentation *is* required, however, multiple format options are offered for maximum flexibility. This class is highly interactive but students can choose how they want to participate (verbally, in the chat, or not at all). Please reach out if your teen has any learning needs I can be aware of to help them learn best! If Outschool's new "marketplace fee" (which goes to Outschool, not teachers) pushes this class out of your budget, use code BISHINSTODAY10 to offset it. PLEASE NOTE: This class will only run with 3 or more learners, due to the interactive and collaborative nature of the class. Classroom note: I try to create spaces that are supportive, cozy, and interactive. My classes are structured, but casual and often flexible. To reduce distractions and support students, I will share a basic set of guidelines at the beginning of class: 1) After verifying, your video can be on or off! 2) Learners can respond verbally or in *on-topic* chats. Alternatively, students who need more time can respond to in-class questions in a DM after class, for feedback. 3) Don't intentionally distract folks (e.g. putting things directly in front of the camera) 4) To reduce visual distractions: no video filters or avatars. Choose a background at the beginning of class and stick with it (except for blur, which can be used anytime). 5) If necessary, I will move a disruptive student to the waiting room. If appropriate, I will let them back a few minutes later for a second chance. If this occurs and you have questions, please reach out to Support. 6) Any racist, homophobic, misogynistic, body shaming, or violent language/images will result in removal from class. (This very rarely happens, but it's important to understand that I take this seriously.) If this happens, email outschool@support.com with any questions. A few other notes: - Per OS policy, if there are no students in the classroom 10 minutes after class starts, I will log off and end class. (If you're having tech issues trying to enter the classroom, just send a message or post in the classroom, so I know you are there!) - If you cannot attend, please let me know at least 7 days before the 1st class, so I can try to transfer you to a different section. (If you request a transfer close to the start date, and it will result in the class dropping below the learner minimum, I may not be able to offer a transfer. But if I can, I will!) - Class recordings are shared in the classroom approximately 4-12 hours after class. Outschool's doesn't allow learner to watch a video until they have attended a class within the series OR they are a Verified Learner (with a green checkmark). - Learners are encouraged to advocate for how they would like to participate. If your learner needs adult help (e.g. adult on screen, adult answers for child or facilitates answers, adult takes notes), please let me know in advance per OS parent guidance.
