Lesson 1
Draw an Abstract Heart Design
In this one-time class, students will learn the term "abstract," while drawing several hearts on their paper. The abstract part comes from the other lines and unique details that we will include in our drawings. The hearts will be outlined in black Sharpie (the thick, chisel-point Sharpie is really awesome for this, but the regular fine point works just fine), and then colored in the medium of student's choice: crayon, marker, watercolor pencil, or watercolor paint.
As a licensed art teacher, I have developed techniques for breaking down drawing lessons into simple, easy-to-follow steps. Once we get the basics done, I give my students freedom to complete their project using their own imagination, thereby giving them the opportunity to take what I have taught them to a different, fun and creative level.
Paper (heavy paper, such as watercolor paper, is encouraged if student will be using wet media)
pencil and eraser
black Sharpie (regular fine point or chisel tip) or similar permanent black marker
Color media of choice: crayons, markers, watercolor pencils, watercolor paint
Bowl of water and brush if wet media will be used
