🎯This class targets the specific skills needed to solve addition and subtraction word problems. If your child has difficulty solving math word problems, or gets caught up in the wording, this class will explicitly take them step by step through the process using the "part, part, whole" schema. 🧩The part, part, whole schema refers to the idea that a whole consists of parts arranged in a specific configuration. 🧩 For example: 3 (part) + 7 (part) = 10 (whole) ALSO, 10 (whole) - 7 (part) = 3 (part) This framework is helpful in understanding word problems because with the information provided we can determine if we have two parts and we're looking for the total or whole (add to solve) or if we have the total and one part and we need to solve for the missing part (subtract to solve). In this class, I will systematically take learners from the concept of fact families with addition and subtraction to identifying when to add and subtract using the part, part, whole framework, to independently solving word problems using these skills. How it works: 🔍 📽️This is a self-paced class which means there are NO LIVE lessons. 📽️ Each lesson will include 1 video and a simple follow-up activity. Check out the syllabus for a detailed overview of each lesson. The self-paced class format allows students to work at their own pace and review lessons whenever needed. I welcome questions from parents and students along the way. I'm always happy to provide support if your child is having difficulty with a lesson or activity.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to fit numbers in a fact family into a part, part, whole framework.
Students will be able to use their knowledge of part, part, whole to determine when to add or subtract.
Syllabus
3 Lessons
over 3 WeeksLesson 1:
Fact Families
In this first lesson, we'll start by looking at the concept of fact families and how this concept relates to problem solving. Learners will have a chance to practice building number sentences and identifying the "part, part, whole".
8 mins of video lessons
Lesson 2:
Exploring Part, Part, Whole Addition & Subtraction Problems
In this lesson we'll start looking at the concept of "part, part, whole" as it relates to solving word problems. I will demonstrate how we can identify the information we have, the information we need and how that helps us determine whether we will add or subtract. Learners will be given practice problems where they have to read and determine whether to add or subtract.
Lesson 3:
Consolidate & Practice Solving Together
In this final lesson, I will review the "part, part, whole" concept and then provide worked examples of how to solve word problems using addition and subtraction. Learners will be given practice problems to solve independently.
