Self-Paced Full Year of 5th Grade Math (Certified & Experienced Teacher)

This course teaches a full-year of 5th grade math. It uses the Eureka/EngageNY curriculum, combined with Ms. C's own efficient pacing and project-based instruction, to introduce place value and decimal fractions at a 5th grade level.

Assignments
1-2 hours per week. Students will have at least 1 assignment per lesson, in addition to a Project Based Learning project for each unit. They will also need to review any topics they struggle with outside of class.
Letter Grade
Students will be given direct scores and weekly feedback on their progress towards mastery of 5th grade math. At the end of each unit, they will earn a score. 70% and above is considered meeting grade-level expectations. 95% and above is exceeding grade-level expectations. Anything below 70% requires review and/or a second attempt. At the end of the class, students will receive an overall letter grade for their work on all assignments, tests, and projects to determine whether they have mastered 5th grade math.

Welcome to Self-Paced 5th Grade Math! This flexible 18-week course is aligned with 5th-grade Common Core and NGSS standards, providing a comprehensive and engaging math experience. Students will develop critical math skills, apply them to real-world scenarios, and gain confidence in their problem-solving abilities—all at their own pace.

What will be taught?

This course focuses on key 5th-grade math concepts, including:
-Operations with fractions and decimals
-Mastering multi-digit operations
-Understanding volume, area, and measurement
-Graphing and interpreting data
-Real-world problem-solving with mathematical models
-What topics will you cover?

Students will explore these topics through:
-84 step-by-step lessons that build conceptual understanding and procedural fluency
-Project-Based Learning (PBL) tasks at the end of each unit, integrating math into real-life applications
-Practice problem sets for every lesson to reinforce skills
-Mid-unit and end-of-unit assessments to check understanding and progress

How is the class structured?
The course includes:
-18 weeks of content divided into manageable units
-Flexible pacing so students can review or accelerate as needed
-Videos, examples, and independent practice exercises
-Engaging PBL challenges that connect math to real-world scenarios-

Lessons are pre-recorded for flexibility, with supplemental materials such as interactive slides, real-world examples, and visual aids. Each unit emphasizes active learning, helping students understand the "why" behind math concepts.

This course prioritizes clarity, engagement, and application. Concepts are broken into accessible steps with visual examples and relatable contexts. Students are encouraged to think critically and approach challenges creatively. Unit 1: Unit 1: Place Value and Decimal Fractions
Lesson 1:
Multiplicative Patterns and the Place Value Chart
 Students will learn to use a place value chart to manipulate numbers by powers of ten, including with the use of exponents. 
Lesson 2:
Decimal Fractions and Place Value Patterns
 Students will use standard, expanded, and word form to name decimal units, and be able to compare decimal fractions to the thousandths place with <, >, = 
Lesson 3:
Place Value and Rounding Decimal Fractions
 Students will be able to round decimal numbers to the nearest ones, tenths, hundredths, and thousandths place using a number line to support their reasoning. 
Lesson 4:
Adding and Subtracting Decimals
 Students will be able to use a place value chart to add and subtract basic decimal fractions
