Homework
1-2 hours per week. After watching the video, students should write their own descriptive paragraph and submit it to me for evaluation.
Assessment
My one-page evaluation examines a student's organization/structure, grammar, and overall writing style. I always offer compliments on what a student does well along with ideas for improvement.

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Paragraphs are the building blocks of writing, so it's critical that students master this form before moving on to longer styles of composition.

In this one-time self-paced class, which uses a pre-recorded video, students will learn the basics of paragraph construction, such as the required sentence types, as well as techniques for brainstorming descriptive details and how to write strong topic and concluding sentences.

Once students complete the homework, they should submit their paragraph to me for an evaluation that analyzes their grammar, structure, and overall writing style.

Although this is a video-based class, I still love it when students interact with me in the online classroom or through messages. I often send video feedback as well for a personal touch. Of course, each evaluation is personalized to the student.

The evaluation will give students and parents a clear understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the learner's writing based on the paragraph.

The video begins with a fun warmup that engages students, followed by clear instruction on how to organize and compose a paragraph. Throughout the video, I use interactive activities, such as asking students to choose the best sentence for a topic sentence.

At the start of class, students will receive a worksheet they can use to follow along through the video.

Lesson 1:
Write a descriptive paragraph!
What is a paragraph? First, we'll examine the job of each sentence in a paragraph using fun (and rather odd!) animals. Then, we'll talk about how we use the five sentences to describe things. You'll have plenty of activities along the way to test out your new skills!

Bachelor’s Degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Hi there! I've taught on Outschool for almost four years. Prior to that, I was a professional writer/journalist, and I hold degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill in French literature and journalism.

I have five kids of my own, all of whom have different learning styles, but the one approach that works for all of them is to make writing fun. My goal is to help students understand that they CAN write, and, more importantly, they can write WELL.
