4 lessons//4 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Painting the Background for Sky at NightUsing blue watercolor paint, we will create a background painting using wet-on-wet technique to create the illusion of looking up at the sky at night. Students will practice drawing trees in preparation for the next class. To flatten paintings in between classes, once completely dry, students can place them under a stack of heavy books. Students will upload their paintings before the next class session.Week 2Lesson 2Painting the Landscapeteacher demo and student painting of stars in the sky, using white paint and back end of paint brush, as well as painting trees and foliage in black silhouette around entire edge of paper (all 4 sides). Paper will be set aside to dry, and then shared in the classroom before the next class session.Week 3Lesson 3Painting the Background for Underwater SceneUsing blue watercolor paint, we will again use the wet-on-wet technique, and applying additional techniques, this time to create the illusion that we are underwater, looking up at the surface. Once again, we will flatten dry paintings in between classes, under a stack of heavy books to flatten them. Students will upload their paintings and give each other positive comments on their efforts. Students will select and practice drawing an ocean animal to paint next week, sharing their drawings in thWeek 4Lesson 4Painting the Underwater SceneTeacher demo and student painting of a coral reef around the edges of the paper, with additional details of ocean plants an animals, as well as main ocean animal to paint in/near the middle of the paper. This will be set aside to dry, and shared in the classroom for final comments.
- Students will learn how to create paintings from an unusual perspective: looking straight up from below.
- Students will learn to paint two different types of backgrounds with blue watercolor paint: One that looks up at the night sky and one that looks up from underwater.
- Students will create detailed landscapes and seascapes in silhouette form.
As a licensed art teacher, I have developed techniques for breaking down drawing lessons into simple, easy-to-follow steps. Once we get the basics done, I give my students freedom to complete their project using their own imagination, thereby giving them the opportunity to take what I have taught them to a different, fun and creative level.

Sketchbooks and/or "practice" paper (like copier paper or a cheap tablet of newsprint paper) Watercolor paper Watercolor paint. Only blue will be used; a set of pan watercolors OR a single tube of blue can be used AT LEAST two paintbrushes: a medium flat brush and a very small round brush. A full set is preferred, to give students more choices. Black acrylic and white acrylic (can be craft paint) pencils, erasers, sharpener bowl of water (recycled sour cream or similar containers are GREAT for this!) Helpful: Images from google searches: trees, coral reef, sea life. Try specific searches for silhouettes, line drawings, and images of sea animals from above or below, not from the side.
