SELF-PACED ART COURSE: Draw and Paint Using the Principles of Design

In this 7-session self-paced semester course, students will learn what the principles of design are, how to identify them in a work of art, and how to use them in their own art.

 Week 1
Lesson 1
Introduction to Principles of Design; Principle of Pattern
Introduction of course and the principles of design. Students will be introduced to the element of pattern and practice drawing a variety of patterns using the provided handout, then create a work of art based on patterns. All art, including the handout, should be uploaded into the classroom for the teacher to see.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Principle of Balance
Students will be introduced to the principle of balance, and its important role in art. Students will practice drawing with symmetrical and asymmetrical balance in their provided handout, then create a work of art based on symmetrical or asymmetrical balance. All art, including the handout, should be uploaded into the classroom for the teacher to see.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Principle of Emphasis
Students will be introduced to the principle of emphasis Students will use the provided handout to show their understanding of the above concept. Students will create a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on emphasis, and upload all artwork, including the handout, for the teacher to see.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Principle of Rhythm
Students will be introduced to the principle of rhythm as it pertains to art (similar to rhythm in music, except it's visual!). Students will use the provided handout to create visual rhythms. Students will create a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on form, to be uploaded along with the handout, for the teacher to see.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Principle of Harmony
Students will be introduced to the principle of harmony in a work of art (also similar to harmony in music, except visual). We will use the handout to create simple examples of harmony. Students will complete a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on value, to be uploaded along with the handout, for the teacher to see.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Principle of Variety
Students will be introduced to the principle of variety. Students will create simple examples of variety on their handout. Students will create a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on texture, to be uploaded along with the handout, for the teacher to see.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Principle of Movement
Students will be introduced to the principle of movement in art. Students will show their understanding of what movement might look like in art on their handout. Students may also want to sketch the difference on other paper as well. Students will create a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on space, to be completed and uploaded into the classroom within a week of starting the final assignment.
Students will know and understand each of the principles of art and how they can be used in a work of art.
I am a licensed, veteran art teacher with over 30 years' experience teaching the elements of art. Over the years, I've found and developed fun and interesting art projects and processes to help kids learn and remember what the elements are and why they are important to the artistic process.
Homework Offered
Because this is a flex class, each weekly assignment is essentially "homework," with the expectation that students will upload images of their assignments in the classroom.
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Informal assessments will take place during class in the form of teacher observation and possible suggestions (as requested by students).
Grades Offered
Certificates of Completion will be offered upon parent completion of class feedback. Letter or Number grades will be offered per parent request.

A handout with the definitions of each Principle of Design will be provided in the first class posting. Pencils, eraser, pencil sharpener crayons, colored pencils markers (Crayola or Target brand) both regular and fineline if possible. Crayola goes on sale for $1/box, and Target brand might go on sale for .50/box. LOTS of paper! Sketchbook and/or printer paper for practice good quality drawing paper (Canson or Strathmore tablets are great) in 9X12 or 11X14. These are often on sale at Michael's) EITHER Bristol Board OR watercolor paper (tablets, similar to drawing paper described above, same size) watercolor paint--Crayola or Prang is best. These sometimes go on sale as well before school starts black Sharpies--fine point (regular size sharpie) and ultra-fine point digital camera or phone camera (optional!)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
