Class experience
US Grade 4 - 7
Beginner - Intermediate Level
The Elements of Art and Principles of Design are very simple but important components of the National Core Art Standards. This is a favorite unit of study in my "brick and mortar" art classes at the school where I teach! Students will analyze one element of art each week, and create a work of art that incorporates or emphasizes that element. The elements, in order of study, will be line, shape, color. form, texture, value and space. Amount and type of homework will be based on individual...

Week 1Lesson 1Introduction to Elements of art; Element of LineStudents will be introduced to the elements of art. We will analyze the elements of line and practice drawing a variety of lines using the provided handout, then create a work of art based on lines. All art, including the handout, should be uploaded into the classroom for the teacher to see.Week 2Lesson 2Element of ShapeStudents will be introduced to the elements of Shape (organic and geometric), and the role they play in making art. Students will practice drawing both organic and geometric shapes in their provided handout, then create a work of art based on organic or geometric shape, or both. All art, including the handout, should be uploaded into the classroom for the teacher to see.Week 3Lesson 3Element of ColorStudents will be introduced to the elements of color (primary, secondary, warm, cool, and complementary). Students will use the provided handout to show their understanding of the above concepts. Students will create a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on color, and upload all artwork, including the handout, for the teacher to see.Week 4Lesson 4Element of FormStudents will review the geometric shapes from session 2, then analyze ways in which some of them can be made to look like a three-dimensional form. They will learn how to use light and shadow to draw several forms on the handout for lesson 4. Students will create a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on form, to be uploaded along with the handout, for the teacher to see.Week 5Lesson 5Element of ValueStudents will discern the difference in value as it pertains to lightness or darkness of a color, and monetary value of a work of art. We will practice using various applications of pressure and other techniques with different tools to create value studies on the provided handout. Students will complete a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on value, to be uploaded along with the handout, for the teacher to see.Week 6Lesson 6Element of TextureStudents will discern the difference in value as it pertains to lightness or darkness of a color, and monetary value of a work of art. We will practice using various applications of pressure and other techniques with different tools to create value studies on the provided handout. Students will complete a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on value, to be uploaded along with the handout, for the teacher to see.Week 7Lesson 7Element of SpaceStudents will discern the difference between positive and negative space, and use the handout to understand the difference. Students may also want to sketch the difference on other paper as well. Students will create a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on space, to be completed and uploaded into the classroom within a week of starting the final assignment.
Students will know and understand each of the elements of art and how they can be used in a work of art.
I am a licensed, veteran art teacher with over 30 years' experience teaching the elements of art. Over the years, I've found and developed fun and interesting art projects and processes to help kids learn and remember what the elements are and why they are important to the artistic process.
