Reading music can be difficult. And understanding compound time signatures can make it feel impossible sometimes. That’s why we are diving into the “Secret Language of Music” to understand the rules, idiosyncrasies, and general theory of time signatures such as 6/8 and 9/8. We will be doing a lot of clapping and counting, and even playing a few games! Day 1: -Counting time signatures with an 8 on the bottom -Grouping notes Day 2: -Strong and weak beats in compound time -3/4 vs. 6/8 **This class is assuming that students have a basic knowledge of rhythm and know the following notes and theory: -eighth, quarter, half, dotted half, and whole notes -the corresponding rests to the above listed notes -time signatures of 4/4, 3/4, and 2/4 **If your student is unfamiliar with these, or needs a refresher, I suggest taking “Secret Language of Music: Rhythm” first.
Learning Goals
Students will gain a fundamental understanding of compound rhythm, and it’s application. They will learn about the rules of writing music in these meters, using a very hands-on method.
