NOTES: (1) This is an introductory basic class. We will practice writing words in cipher code. (2) The advanced class will practice writing phrases and sentences in cipher code. The first 5 to 10 minutes will be for students to introduce themselves. We will start with the QWERTY keyboard-based cipher (e.g., A=Q, B=W, C=E, D=R, E=T, and F=Y). Miss McKinney will guide students on how to write coded messages and how to decode messages. The teacher will demonstrate, then each student will be able to take a turn. If time permits and students are interested in learning other styles of cipher, here is a list of potential other cipher code methods: * Abash * Caesar Shift * Pig Latin * Pig Pen / Tic Tac Toe * Rail Fence * Clock * Dice * Custom (student creates their own)
Learning Goals
Students will practice using computational thinking when writing and decoding cipher coded words.
