Class Experience

US Grade 2
This semester long math class is ideal for 7 through 9 year old children, depending on their abilities and previous knowledge. The children will be introduced to a topic during the class session and then have follow-up activities to do during the week. While the class meets three times per week, families should be prepared to spend time daily, practicing math.

Students and parents should be willing to engage in a variety of multi-sensory activities to support learning math concepts, in addition to class time. Each week will include several pages of home-time learning, outside of class session time.

The class will meet two times per week for 30 minute sessions and will utilize Singapore Math, a world renowned math program. Families are responsible for purchasing the required materials as students will have regular assignments, in addition to active, sensory-immersion activities that are developmentally appropriate for 7 - 9 year old children.

Singapore Primary Math is an excellent series for those who want a fair amount of practice without excess busywork.

My classes focus heavily on the various tools, strategies, and models available to students, and we use these constantly during class to help them develop the ability to determine on their own, which tool or model best applies to a given situation.

Students will cover the following topics:

Topic 1: Place Value through 1,000
We will explore ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands, as well as standard form, expanded form, and word form of numbers. We will also explore Roman, Mayan, and Egyptian numerals as an extra feature (not in Singapore) which helps children understand place value better, by way of comparison.

Topic 2: Number Patterns
Children will explore patterns within numbers, looking at increasing or decreasing via a set pattern, and continuing those patterns.

Topic 3: Compare and Order Numbers
Children will be asked to compare two quantities and will be introduced to the idea of greater than and less than, including the symbols used to express this concept in mathematical sentences

Topic 4: Number Lines
Children will learn to use this valuable visual aid to calculate

Topic 5: Count Money
Children will learn the basic denominations of money, with a focus on the US Dollar. When students from outside the US are enrolled, we do look at those currencies as well, so the discussion may include Euros, Canadian Dollars, etc... This topic lends itself very well to some interdisciplinary studies, and I provide the children with opportunities to explore these further at home.

Topic 6: Addition within 1,000
Children will use a variety of manipulatives to aid them in developing fluency with addition. These include ten frames, hundreds charts, and further work with the number line.

Topic 7: Add Without Renaming (Carrying)
Children will be introduced to vertical addition that does not involve regrouping.

Topic 8: Addition With Renaming (Carrying)
Children will learn to add with regrouping. Skills that are emphasized during this topic are breaking numbers apart (number bonds). Students are encouraged to use manipulatives to develop this greater flexibility with numbers.

Topic 9: Subtraction within 1,000
Students will practice subtraction using ten frames, number lines, and other tools that help them develop fluency

Topic 10: Subtraction without Renaming (Borrowing)
Children will work with standard subtraction algorithms, while simultaneously using manipulatives to aid their understanding.

Topic 11: Subtraction with Renaming (Borrowing)
Students will learn to break numbers apart, as needed. We will use manipulatives and color code our work.

Topic 12: Addition and Subtraction
Children will work on word problems, noticing the relationship between addition and subtraction, seeing that they undo each other.

Topic 13: Addition and Subtraction Using Bar Models
Children will learn to represent their work using bar models. They will have instruction in how to create them and ample opportunities to create their own. Children should have manipulatives available for this lesson.

Topic 14: Part-Whole Models
Children will once again see the connections between addition and subtraction as they create part-part-whole models.

Topic 15: Word Problems
Children will have opportunity to work through word problems, determining which operations are needed and creating their own models.

Topic 16: Consolidating and review of semester's work.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have a dual degree in Economics and Spanish, and spent a significant time calculating GDP, PPP, and tariffs, amongst other things. Needless to say, this involved quite a bit of math. Since then, I have spent many years tutoring and teaching math locally, and now, for the past several years on Outschool.
