Join in at any week! In my seventeen years of teaching elementary math, I am very familiar with the priority math standards of second, as well as the progression needed to enter the grades to follow. I have participated in many hours of professional development for many different research-based math strategies which makes me prepared to help students where they are academically with the strategy they are learning. I am intentionally keeping this class small so that I can give the attention that is needed to guide and support the students through these priority math skills. Students and parents can keep in contact with me through the classroom if they have questions. I also offer one-on-one tutoring sessions as an option for struggling students or enrichment lessons as well. What sets this class apart from other math classes is my experience in addition to my ongoing feedback AFTER the class. Students are given an assignment between, the classes for the week, to complete that allows the students to practice the same math concept. On DAY 2 of the week lesson, we will check that homework page together. This allows students the ability to check their assignment, ask questions, get additional support and practice with the skill of the week. CLASS AGENDA DAY 1: -Teachers models the strategy of the lesson with a sample problem. -Teacher presents another problem with students’ coaching (they coach me to solve the problem). -Students choose to try another task WITH me OR independently and we share out at the end. -A practice page is assigned for students to complete between classes as a homework page. DAY 2: -We will check the homework page assigned from Day 1. -We will practice, review, and challenge as needed based on students' progression. HOW the class is MANAGED: After the lesson, students will choose either to work alone on a task or with the teacher to complete each task and we will share our results. I will ask MANY questions to guide students to the correct strategies to solve the task. Students will need a whiteboard to show your work so I can better understand your math thinking. They can also use the chat that will be set up to go only to me, rather than to the other students. ***Word Problems will be incorporated in all classes***
Addition and subtraction of 2 and 3-digit numbers in relation to place value.
Introduction to multiplication and division in relation to repeated addition and sharing into groups equally.
We will learn, practice, and get feedback with place-value including 2 and 3-digit numbers (EX: what is the value of the 7 in the number 374?)
After class, I will provide a work page in the class room that focuses on these same concepts. This will be used to check for understanding for the follow up lesson that week.
We will use the practice page provided from the lesson of the week over place value, to check, correct and practice similar skills for progression of this skill.
We will learn, practice, and get feedback with changing out ones and tens to change the value of 2-digit numbers. We will use base-ten blocks depending on the students' need for concrete understanding (EX 45 ones and 2 tens is the same value as 65)
After class, I will provide a work page in the class room that focuses on these same concepts. This will be used to check for understanding for the follow up lesson that week.
We will use the practice page provided from the lesson of the week over flexible tens and ones, to check, correct and practice similar skills for progression of this skill.
No supplies will be needed other than the work page that I will post in the class after Day 1's lesson. This is important for teacher feedback during Day 2's lesson review. Also, a dry-erase board would be helpful. Otherwise paper to show their work will work too.
