Seaside Summer FLEX Camp - Create the Timeless Look of Mosaic Using Procreate!
What's included
Class Experience
***PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS AN IN-DEPTH, MULTI-WEEK FLEX CLASS, COVERING STEP-BY-STEP TECHNIQUE AND TOOL INSTRUCTION. THERE ARE NO LIVE CLASSES. PLEASE READ BELOW TO SEE EACH WEEK’S CONTENT*** This class DOES NOT require any prerequisites since the principles/techniques needed to complete the class are taught DURING the lesson*** Week 1: In the first lesson students will sketch out the scenery, focusing on composition, including balance, position, and detail. Week 2: The second lesson takes students through the process of creating the grout for the mosaic tiles. After laying down the grout they transform the sketch into shapes, filled with exciting colors, and then prepped for cutting. This stage is critical as it sets the location and overall scene of the picture itself. Week 3: The third lesson introduces students to a process of “digital cutting”, of all the individual tiles. Using powerful yet simple tools in Procreate you will learn how to separate each section into small pieces, that create the mosaic itself. Week 4: The final week covers the process of color-tinting individual tiles, to help create an authentic hand-made look. Once the tiles are complete, students will finish up by learning how to light your mosaic, and create shadow, to further enhance the depth and richness we have come to know and love about mosaics. OPTIONAL: This class also includes the PROCREATE TOOL CHALLENGE! Mr. Niven has hidden a Procreate tool, in each lesson. For each lesson, students can recognize the hidden tool, tell the class which tool it was, and describe the tool’s function, an keep in mind that each tool can operate in multiple ways. The more students involved the better. If you find all 4 Procreate Tools, and can provide proper descriptions of each tool’s use, Mr. Niven will unlock a FREE BONUS DRAWING! Mr. Niven can provide individual feedback using the Outschool classroom via posts, including chat AND the recording feature if desired. This is great for students as it provides more visual connection with Mr. Niven. Happy finding, and happy drawing!

Supply List
Students MUST have Procreate downloaded prior to class. This class can be done on either iPad or iPhone, and though Mr. Niven recommends using a stylus that supports pressure sensitivity for best results in general, it is NOT required to complete this class. If shopping for a stylus, especially for best results with brushes, and added control, Mr. Niven HIGHLY recommends Apple Pencil, as it is BY FAR the best stylus for iPad. Two other brands of stylus Mr. Niven recommends are Wacom Bamboo Fineline or Sketch, and Adonit. Both brands support pressure sensitivity, (on select models), on iPad and iPhone. For more information on software and hardware, including information about Procreate, as well as compatibility, and recommendations for various iPads, or iPhones and styli that support Procreate, please consider enrolling in Mr. Niven’s Digital Art Orientation, for Students and Parents.
