In this four week class, learners will participate in meaningful discussions as we read Neal Shusterman's Scythe. Book clubs are an excellent way to engage reluctant readers or help enthusiastic readers dig a little deeper. Students will need their own copy of the text to complete assigned readings before attending class. 4 lessons//4 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Lesson 1: Chapters 1-10Discussion will focus on author and setting: Scythe is set in a futuristic "perfect" world. What advances have created this appearance of perfection and in what ways is it clear the world still has problems?Week 2Lesson 2Lesson 2: Chapters 11-21Discussion will focus on character development. How have Citra and Rowen's paths diverged? How are they each handling the unexpected change?Week 3Lesson 3Lesson 3: Chapters 22-29Focus on plot and predictions. After discussing this section, we will predict what we think will happen next.Week 4Lesson 4Lesson 4: Chapters 30-40 (end)Focus on themes developed through the story: Death gives life meaning; what makes us human; right/wrong
Students will sharpen their literacy skills while fostering their love of reading.
Homework Offered
Each class will require independent reading covering about 100 pages of text. This book is a real page turner, so many students may have a hard time stopping!1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
