Class Experience

This course will teach you how to model Mario's head in clay in easy steps, from beginning to end.

Learn the basics of sculpting with an easy to follow method. I will show you and explain each step in the process.

- Understand the tools and supplies needed to get started in clay modeling.

- Quickly build a rough sketch in clay.

- Create a base where the clay model will stand.

- Shape your model so it looks like Mario!

- Make each detail of the face, such as eyes, mustache, and hat.

You don't need any prior experience to start this course, and it can be successfully taken by beginners. You will need some basic modeling tools and clay, as described in the materials section.

Supply List
• Oil Based non drying Polymer Clay in Red (3) - White - Blue (3) - Tan (2)- Brown - Yellow - Black
Oil-based clay is a non-drying clay. It can be reused indefinitely because it never hardens. Because it is oil-based and not water-based like ceramic clay, it cannot go into a kiln—it would just melt! It is non-water soluble and is often used in animation. Depending on the type you get, it has little to no odor and there are no serious health concerns associated with using it. The nice thing about oil-based clay is that you can just keep experimenting with it over and over again without having to worry about it drying out or becoming brittle. When you’re finished sculpting for the day, there’s no special treatment for it—just leave it on a flat surface and walk away. The drawback to oil-based clay is that, unless you make a mold of your finished sculpture, there’s no guarantee it will stand the test of time. High temperatures (even direct sunlight from a window) can cause the clay to melt.
