In this class, students use Scratch to code their own interactive stories, animations, and games. In the process, they learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. Each session we’ll create a new project in order to accomplish these goals, and students will learn how to use motion, looks, sound, events, control, message, sensing, and variable code blocks and will identify the function of cloning and conditional code. Week 1: Wizard Tag project shows students how to create a shooting game Week 2: Deep Dive project focuses on animation, story telling, changing scenes and backgrounds Week 3: Baseball Game project combines animation with gaming as students simulate a real baseball game Week 4: Flappy Bird project shows student how to create an obstacle game where players avoid obstacles to stay alive. Scratch is a free, open-source platform for block coding created by software engineers from MIT. Students will create their free account and use it for the class. No additional materials are required. Students should complete Levels 1-3 classes (or equivalent with another teacher) before taking Level 4.
Students will continue to use motion, looks, sound, events, control, message, sensing, and variables code blocks to create a shooting game, an animation, a simulated baseball game, and an obstacle game.A desktop, laptop computer or iPad with a keyboard. High-speed Internet required for Zoom and a free Scratch account. Chrome browser is preferred but Safari will work on iPad.

I have been an avid video game player since I was a kid. Some of my favorite games include Minecraft, League of Legends, and Call of Duty. Now I’m just as passionate about teaching kids how they can make their own games to play, and Scratch is the perfect starting point. I love to be active playing sports or hanging with my friends. When I’m not working, studying, or exercising, I am writing and recording songs. I relate well with kids from all ethnic backgrounds, and I am fully bilingual in Spanish and English. I am currently a student at Florida A&M in Tallahassee, FL, where I won a full scholarship with an ROTC Marine scholarship. I love teaching kids how to create games and animations with code on Scratch!

I have more than 20 years of teaching experience in the classroom and online, I get to help students make their stories come to life through coding and animation. I have a Masters of Science in Instructional Design, and and I’ve designed our Scratch curriculum to take students from no knowledge to mastery one step at a time.
