In this class, students use Scratch to code their own interactive stories, animations, and games. In the process, they learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. Each session we’ll create a new project in order to accomplish these goals, and students will learn how to use motion, looks, sound, events, control, sensing, variable, and operator code blocks and will identify the function of cloning and conditional code. Week 1: Monkey Jump prepares students to create a jump game (game focused) Week 2: Space Walk introduces to conditional code so sprites can reach to each other upon touch and variables which are used for points in a game (game focused) Week 3: Feed the Frog lets students practice costume control and message coding while gaining points for keeping a virtual pet fed (game focused) Week 4: Make It Pop project introduces students to cloning and integrates variables for points Scratch is a free, open-source platform for block coding created by software engineers from MIT. Students will create their free account and use it for the class. No additional materials are required. Students should complete our Level 1 class (or equivalent with another teacher) before taking Level 2. Parents, please be available to assist your student throughout the class. They may need help splitting their screens, overall navigation, and communication with the instructor during the project build. **If you cannot be available to assist, this is not the right class for you and your child.**

Adriel "AJ" Puello
I have been an avid video game player since I was a kid. Some of my favorite games include Minecraft, League of Legends, and Call of Duty. Now I’m just as passionate about teaching kids how they can make their own games to play, and Scratch is the perfect starting point. I love to be active playing sports or hanging with my friends. When I’m not working, studying, or exercising, I am writing and recording songs. I relate well with kids from all ethnic backgrounds, and I am fully bilingual in Spanish and English. I am currently a student at Florida A&M in Tallahassee, FL, where I won a full scholarship with an ROTC Marine scholarship. I love teaching kids how to create games and animations with code on Scratch!
