Beginner Level
An action-packed Scratch adventure for kids ages 7-12! In this four-week live class, your child will build a new space-themed mini-game each week—racing rockets, dodging asteroids, and rescuing aliens—using Scratch’s beginner-friendly, drag-and-drop coding on the web. Each 60-minute session introduces a fresh cosmic challenge, guiding kids step-by-step through essential coding skills while keeping the fun sky-high! What Kids Will Learn: • Fundamental Coding Concepts - Sequencing – Putting steps in the correct order - Events – Making things happen with triggers - Loops – Repeating actions to streamline code - Debugging – Fixing mistakes to improve games • Game Development Basics - Moving and animating characters - Adding sounds and effects - Designing interactive challenges - Creating engaging, playable mini-games Key Outcomes: • Master Scratch basics with hands-on projects - Gain confidence in problem-solving and creative thinking • Create four fully playable space-themed mini-games to share • Prepare for more advanced coding in our progressive Scratch program This Level 1 class is the perfect launchpad for young coders, setting them on a path to explore more advanced Scratch adventures—and beyond! 🌠✨ --- Our Progressive Scratch Program From the team behind top Roblox and Minecraft classes, this is Level 1 of our carefully designed Scratch program, built to grow with your child and spark their passion for game-making. We offer a structured yet creative journey for ages 4-12, introducing coding concepts through fun, hands-on projects: • Pre-Level: “Catch the Magic Star!” (Ages 4-7, 4 weeks) – Young learners use Scratch Jr. to create a simple tap-to-catch game, building confidence with basic coding. • Level 1: “Cosmic Rescue – Space Mini-Games!” (Ages 7-12, 4 weeks) – Beginners make a new space-themed game each week, mastering fundamental coding skills in Scratch. • Level 2: “Tricky Trail” (Ages 7-12, 6 weeks) – Intermediate coders design maze games with scoring, traps, and game mechanics. • Level 3: “Hero’s Journey” (Ages 7-12, 8 weeks) – Advanced learners create multi-level adventures with more complex logic, storytelling, and interactivity. • Scratch Clubs (Ages 4-12, ongoing) – Weekly creative coding sessions where kids design new mini-games in a fun, social environment. Why Scratch? Developed by MIT, Scratch is the world’s leading coding platform for kids, using colorful drag-and-drop blocks to bring ideas to life—no typing required! It runs in a web browser, making it easy to start, and teaches core programming skills like logic, sequencing, and problem-solving through interactive play. In “Cosmic Rescue,” kids get their first taste of game development, building confidence while having fun with space-themed coding challenges. What Makes Our Program Stand Out? • A New Game Every Week – Unlike single-project courses that can feel slow, our approach keeps kids engaged with fresh mini-games like “Rocket Race” and “Alien Dodge.” • Step-by-Step Skill Progression – We introduce one key skill at a time (e.g., motion, then collisions), ensuring kids truly grasp each concept before moving forward. • Inspired by Real Games – With our expertise in Roblox and Minecraft, we make coding feel like an adventure, helping kids build games they’ll be excited to play and share. By the end of this course, your child will have created four space-themed mini-games, built a strong foundation in coding, and be ready for the next challenge—whether that’s moving on to “Tricky Trail” or continuing to experiment with their own game ideas!
Learning Goals
Control Characters: Learn to move sprites with keys or clicks, starting with simple motion blocks.
Add Action and Sound: Create interactions (e.g., touch to win) and fun sound effects to bring games to life.
Syllabus
4 Lessons
over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
Rocket Race
- Core Skill: Motion and Sequencing – Learn to use “Move” blocks (e.g., “Move 10 steps”) and “Forever” loops to make a rocket sprite travel smoothly across the screen with arrow keys.
- Coding Concept: Understand sequencing—putting commands in order (e.g., “Start on Green Flag,” then “Move”) to control actions.
- Activity: Create a rocket sprite, code it to race left-to-right using arrow keys, set a starry backdrop, and test speed adjustments for fun.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Star Collector
- Core Skill: Events and Interactions – Use “When Key Pressed” blocks for ship movement and “Hide” blocks to make stars disappear when touched.
- Coding Concept: Explore events—how actions (e.g., touching a star) trigger responses—and basic collision detection (e.g., “If touching”).
- Activity: Code a ship sprite to move with keys, add three star sprites that vanish on contact, set a space backdrop, and test collecting all stars to win.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Alien Dodge
- Core Skill: Loops and Randomness – Use “Repeat” loops to keep asteroids moving and “Go to Random Position” blocks for unpredictable patterns.
- Coding Concept: Master loops—repeating actions automatically—and introduce randomness to make games dynamic and challenging.
- Activity: Control a ship sprite with keys, code three asteroids to move across the screen in loops, add a space backdrop, and play to dodge crashes.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Cosmic Rescue
- Core Skill: Sound and Debugging – Add “Play Sound” blocks (e.g., “beep”) for rescues and learn to fix errors (e.g., sprite not moving) by checking block order.
- Coding Concept: Understand debugging—spotting and fixing mistakes—and how sound enhances gameplay feedback.
- Activity: Move a ship sprite to rescue three aliens (hide on touch), add a victory sound and backdrop, test and tweak for a polished mini-game to share.

Parental Guidance
- Parental Support: No adult needed during class, but younger kids (7-8) might want help setting up Zoom or Scratch the first time—after that, they’re good to go!
Tech Needs:
- A desktop/laptop with a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) for Scratch (scratch.mit.edu—no download needed).
- Stable internet for Zoom (link provided by Outschool) and Scratch—camera and mic recommended.
- Setup: Open scratch.mit.edu in a browser tab and Zoom on the same device before class—no account needed to start, but creating a free Scratch account saves projects (optional). Test Zoom and Scratch ahead of time.
- Screen Sharing: Kids can share their Scratch screen via Zoom (“Share Screen” button) if they need help—teacher sees it live!
- Optional: Headphones help focus; a mouse is better than a trackpad for dragging blocks.
- Note: This class uses full Scratch on the web, perfect for ages 7-12—no apps or tablets required!
