Science With Miss Robyn: STEM Club
Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 5
Follows Teacher-Created Curriculum
Aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
Our club will meet once a week to learn about different STEM topics, and to do a STEM activity. We will learn about topics from physics, chemistry, life science, astronomy, math and more! The club meetings will be organized into units with a focus such as ecology, physics, or geometry. During that unit, the kids will learn about different concepts through class discussion and by doing different STEM activities. I will use visual graphics such as photos, slideshows, and video clips...

Unit 1STEM in the OlympicsSTEM in the Olympics4 lessons4 WeeksWeek 1Lesson 1Energy Transfer in Athletic EquipmentThe kids will learn about energy transfer in athletic equipment by designing protective padding for a raw egg.Week 2Lesson 2Compression, Tension, and LoadThe kids will learn about the strengths of different shapes by creating a structure that will hold a heavy book.Week 3Lesson 3Compression, Tension, and LoadThe kids will design and begin to build a model parking garage. They will learn about constraints of a building project. They will finish their garage outside of club meeting time.Week 4Lesson 4Compression, Tension, and LoadThe kids will share their model parking garages, and we will wrap up the unit by discussing the concepts that the kids have learned.Unit 2BridgesBridges2 lessons2 WeeksWeek 5Lesson 5Shapes and BridgesThe kids will create a strong bridge from straws using different shapes in their design.Week 6Lesson 6Bridge MaterialsThe kids will test how well a clay pillar withstands a load before failure.Unit 3NavigationNavigation5 lessons5 WeeksWeek 7Lesson 7How Do We Know Where We Are?This lesson focuses on the concepts of latitude and longitude, degrees, minutes and seconds as well as using latitude and longitude on a map.Week 8Lesson 8TopographyThe kids will learn how to use topography maps.Week 9Lesson 9Simple CompassesThe kids will create a simple compass and use it. They will also learn about Earth's magnetic field.Week 10Lesson 10VectorsThe kids will learn about the concept of dead reckoning and how to use vectors to plot a course based on a time and speed. Then they correct the positions with vectors representing winds and currents.Week 11Lesson 11Triangles and NavigationThe kids will learn how triangles are used in navigation. They will be introduced to the Pythagorean Theorem and how to use it.Unit 4Natural DisastersNatural Disasters4 lessons4 WeeksWeek 12Lesson 12TornadoesThe kids will learn how tornadoes form and where they occur in the world. The kids will learn about the damage a tornado can cause and how engineers work to construct buildings that can withstand damage. They will also rate tornadoes based on the damage they cause.Week 13Lesson 13VolcanoesThe kids will learn about volcanoes ,and they will create a model of a volcano and use a chemical reaction to make it erupt.Week 14Lesson 14EarthquakesThe kids will learn what causes Earthquakes, and they will build a structure and test it against an "earthquake".Week 15Lesson 15TsunamiThe kids will learn about tsunami, and they will build a model to create a tsunami.Unit 5Simple Machines and EngineeringSimple Machines and Engineering3 lessons3 WeeksWeek 16Lesson 16Simple MachinesThe kids will learn about simple machines and their uses.Week 17Lesson 17Simple MachinesThe kids will design a simple machine lever that will launch a ping pong ball.Week 18Lesson 18Ping Pong Ball LauncherThe kids will demonstrate their ping pong ball launchers during our club meeting.
This class is taught in English.
- 3-5-ETS1-1. Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
- The learners will experience real life energy transfer as the egg's gravitational potential energy turns into kinetic energy.
- 3-5-ETS1-2. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
- 3-5-ETS1-3. Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
Hi, I'm Miss Robyn, and I have taught on Outschool since October 2020. I enjoy sharing my interests which include science, reading, nature, hiking, and cooking & baking. I have taught elementary school, and I am certified in the state of Texas. I have also taught kids in Scouts, 4-H, day camps, and with my homeschool organization.

3 files available upon enrollmentA pdf of the supplies is available in the classroom.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Each club meeting requires different supplies such as a raw egg, toothpicks, gummy candy, scissors, glue, etc. A pdf of the supplies for each club meeting will be uploaded to the classroom a week before the next club meeting.
