Science - Sensory Anatomy and Physiology: Exploring the Body’s Senses
Class experience
Hello and welcome to my class! Join me on a 5 - week journey to learn and understand the body's sensory systems. From unraveling the mysteries of the five senses to gaining a comprehensive understanding of their inner workings, learners will explore the interplay between anatomy and function. Not only will we be learning but my learners will have fun while doing it. We will label each sensory system and it’s components. I will be using slides, short videos, worksheets, and class...
5 lessons//5 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Structure and Function of the Eye-Overview of the eye's anatomy: cornea, iris, lens, retina, optic nerve -Visual pathways and processing: from light entering the eye to neural signals to the brain -Common eye disorders and diseasesWeek 2Lesson 2Structure and Function of the EarAnatomy of the ear: outer, middle, and inner ear structures Auditory processing: how sound waves are converted into neural signals Balance and equilibrium: vestibular system and its role in spatial orientationWeek 3Lesson 3Structure and Function of the Nose and Olfactory SystemAnatomy of the nasal cavity and olfactory epithelium Olfaction: how smell molecules are detected and processed Clinical aspects: anosmia, olfactory disorders, and their implicationsWeek 4Lesson 4Structure and Function of the Tongue and Taste PerceptionAnatomy of the tongue: taste buds, papillae, and lingual structures Gustation: the five basic tastes and taste perception mechanisms Flavor perception: the integration of taste, smell, and other sensory inputsWeek 5Lesson 5Structure and Function of the Skin and Touch SensationAnatomy of the skin: layers, receptors, and sensory nerves Tactile sensation: how touch stimuli are detected and transmitted Pain perception: nociceptors, pain pathways, and pain modulation
Through detailed study, learners will grasp the processes of vision, hearing, smelling, taste perception, and tactile sensation, including neural signal transmission and sensory integration mechanisms. Moreover, students will gain insight into common disorders affecting these sensory systems and their consequences on sensory perception and overall health. Through interactive sessions and engaging discussions, learners will not only acquire knowledge but also develop an appreciation for the remarkable complexity and functionality of the human body's sensory apparatus.
I was a licensed Massage Therapist. I took Anatomy and Physiology as part of my license. I also have a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and took Anatomy and Physiology a second time while earning my degree.
Homework Offered
Assessments Offered
During each lesson I will assess as the lesson goes along. At the end, to check for understanding, I will ask comprehension questions with a game.Grades Offered
A worksheet to print for each class. It will be sent out the Sunday before class starts.
