What's included
Homework
1 hour per week. Students will be able to choose from a list of homework options for the week. Options may include simple experiments with household objects, further journaling ideas, or reading related books. We will be keeping science notebooks as a record of what the students have learned. I will not require writing if the student is still struggling with that skill, but ask that they do make an entry of some sort even if that just means a drawing that you are able to help them label. Upon registration, please share any special considerations that would make it difficult for your child to fulfill this requirement.Class Experience
US Grade 1 - 2
Do you have a young child interested in many branches of science? Rather than focusing on one specific theme or area of science, we will look at many different branches and will begin to see how they relate to each other. This class, the third level in the series, continues to cover beginning science concepts in the four areas of Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Earth/Space Science. The main methods of learning are through PowerPoint explanations, scientific demonstrations, and science journaling. --Chemistry-- Week 1 - Evaporation and Condensation --Changes in water particles and the basis for water cycle. --Biology-- Week 2 - Skeletal & Muscular System --How animals move. Week 3 - Skeletal Systems in Animals --Body structure in animals and the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates. Week 4 - The Nervous System --How the nervous system controls the body and its movements. Week 5 - The Digestive System --How our internal organs are designed to help us get energy for our movements from our food. --Physics-- Week 6 - Inertia --Left alone, things in motion stay in motion and things at rest stay at rest. Week 7 - Friction --Concept of friction and everyday applications. --Earth and Space Science-- Week 8 - Gravity II --A closer look at gravity, freefall, and the difference between mass and weight. **Class Format** This is a flexible schedule class with NO live meetings. Monday --Weekly Video Posted. Prerecorded instructional videos will be 6-10 minutes in length. --Homework assignments posted. Homework is due Friday. --Students create an entry in their science journal based on the video. Wednesday --Deadline to share science journal. Friday --Homework due. Students may choose from several options that may include an experiment, scavenger hunt, worksheet, book, or other small assignment.

Supply List
Notebook of choice to be used as a science journal. Please find a journal that plays to their unique needs and/or strengths. Past students have used art journals with blank pages, standard wide or college ruled spiral notebooks, and primary composition journals in which the top of the page is blank and the bottom has handwriting lined space. Each of these type of notebooks are widely available and generally cost $1-5. Please let me know if you have any questions. Please note: use of the same journal used for previous levels of this class is encouraged!
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a Charlotte Mason home educator with a degree in English and Spanish Literature. I am passionate about science and the humanities, and am excited to share my passion for these subjects with your children!
I believe that students learn best when they do the work of learning. This means that I will do my best to put them in contact with living ideas and facilitate their journey towards a more comprehensive understanding of the subject. I want your students to participate in their own education. Rather than rote memorization, we will utilize first-hand experience and the process of narration (re-telling what they have learned from the lesson). I hope your children will leave my courses inspired and with a greater desire to continue learning!
