Welcome to our Scholastic Reading and Science Class for kindergarteners and first graders!

In this lively and educational course, young readers will immerse themselves in a world of discovery, as they journey through diverse scientific topics using the engaging Scholastic Hello Readers science books. 

The Level 1 books are approximately Kindergarten to First Grade Level. (Guided Reading Level: C-J; Lexile Level: 100L-400L). The Hello Readers contain simple words and short sentences for new readers. Learners will encounter frequently used words (sight words) and practice sounding out simple sentences. We will also focus on phonics, grammar, language arts, literacy skills and writing skills. (This class ESL-friendly!)

Course Overview:

1. Exciting Weekly Adventures:
Each week, our Level 1 readers will embark on a new and thrilling adventure as they explore various scientific concepts through carefully selected Scholastic Hello Reader books. From exploring the animal kingdom to unraveling the mysteries of our home planet, students will delight in the captivating narratives that bring science to life.

2. Vocabulary Voyage:
Building a strong foundation in vocabulary is a key focus of our course. Students will encounter and learn scientific terms relevant to each week's theme, expanding their language skills in an enjoyable and context-rich environment. Vocabulary-building exercises will reinforce comprehension and communication skills.

3. Interactive Learning and Exploration:
Learning is an immersive experience in our class. Through interactive activities, discussions, and games, students will deepen their understanding of scientific concepts presented in the readings. These engaging sessions encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and a love for reading and learning.

4. Literacy Development:
Beyond science exploration, our Level 1 readers will continue to strengthen essential reading skills, including phonics, fluency, and comprehension. The Scholastic Hello Reader series provides a supportive and leveled approach to literacy development, ensuring that every child progresses at their own pace.

5. Home Extension Activities:
Families are invited to be active participants in their child's learning journey. Upon request, we provide at-home extension activities, fostering a collaborative learning environment between school and home.

Join us on this Scholastic reading and science adventure, where literacy and science converge in an exciting blend of storytelling, vocabulary enrichment, and hands-on exploration. Together, we'll ignite a passion for reading and cultivate a curiosity for the wonders of the natural world.

Because this class is ongoing, learners can enroll at any time. Classes do not build upon each other. 

Materials will be displayed and used in a Google Slide presentation that is screen shared on the teacher's screen only.

Learning Needs
We have experience working with learners of all abilities, including ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ASD and more. Learners of all abilities are welcomed and encouraged to join us in class. Please contact us for more information.

This course was created by and used with permission from Ms. Ashley. Ms. Ashley graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor’s degree, majoring in both education and mathematics. Later, she went on to also earn a TESOL teacher’s certificate. Ms. Ashley currently homeschools all five of her children. She has taught over 10,000+ virtual classes in all subjects over several years on different platforms. She has 18+ years of tutoring/teaching experience, both virtual and in-person, as well as 16 years+ of experience as a volunteer teacher, tutor, and coach in schools and classrooms. In addition to teaching, Ms. Ashley is part of curriculum development and review team for an online ELA and math teaching/tutoring company, where she also serves as a Learning Partner and Academic Advisor for incoming students. Other related experience includes ELA and math tutoring the University of Connecticut Student Center, substitute teaching in the public school system and working for five years as a Financial Controller of a litigation support firm with offices across the United States. Ms. Ashley truly values each and every student, and she hopes to help them to find a love of learning.
