Instruction will be given in a relaxed, fun and upbeat manner three times a week. Students will be rewarded often with verbal cues in an atmosphere that allows them to feel comfortable to ask questions and share ideas or just something they may be excited about. The goal of this class is to make math an enjoyable experience for each student. Students should leave class feeling confident and excited to learn more. An assortment of learning techniques will be used to meet the needs of each learner. This class is also designed to help with flexible and changing schedules. It is ongoing and you can cancel at anytime. Questions from previous classes are always welcomed as well. Class will typically begin with a fun warm up activity followed by an engaging slideshow presentation led by the teacher. The students will then be given time for some guided practice of what they just learned. This might simply be some practice problems or even playing a game or completing a hands on activity. Students will also be assigned some practice work to complete before the next class. Concepts that will be taught: Unit 1 – Numerical Expressions Unit 2 – Place Value & Decimals Unit 3 – Operations - Whole Numbers & Decimals Unit 4 – Adding and Subtracting Fractions Unit 5 – Multiplying and Dividing Fractions Unit 6 – Measurement System & Volume Unit 7 – Geometry Unit 8 – Patterns and the Coordinate Plane There's something for each type of learner! One of the best parts about being a Math Maniac is the many resources provided for each and every class. Posted on the classroom page for each session will be a short video explaining each concept, detailed notes explaining each concept, links to other online resources and fun games related to each concept, as well as hands on task cards to be used at home that are great for kinetic learners. Detailed reports on students progress will be given upon request for students that come to class frequently. Students should have a basic understanding of 4th grade math concepts before enrolling and will be asked to keep their video turned on unless otherwise instructed by the parents that it's ok to have it off.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Utah Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I currently hold a Level 2 Professional Teaching License for the state of Utah. I teach a variety of classes that are appropriate for elementary through middle school students. My favorite classes to teach are related to math and science. I have two years of outdoor/environmental education in the field and have taught in the classroom for over 17 years. I have taught many age groups, ranging from 2nd grade all the way to 9th grade (7 years as an elementary teacher, teaching all subjects as well as 8 years teaching middle school math and science). My goal as an educator is to create engaging, hands-on lessons that are full of discovery and discussion. Content is important, but the ability to problem solve and think for ourselves is also an important component of my lessons. I have lived and taught in four different countries: the U.S., Ecuador, Venezuela and Mexico. I obviously love to travel and feel the best way to learn is through new experiences. I also enjoy playing the guitar, surfing, snowboarding, backpacking in the wilderness and spending time with close friends.
