Class Experience

We will begin drawing the seahorse together with very basic lines, smiles and rainbows. I will take the students step-by-step to create the illusion of the tail wrapping around a piece of seaweed. They will then be able to design their own background with coral, seaweed and other sea creatures. Your seahorse might want a friend to play with! Once we have finished the drawing portion, we will trace everything with a sharpie. While we are tracing, I will talk about warm and cool colors. Students will decide if they would like their seahorse to stand out (warm) or blend in (cool). I will demonstrate tips for painting their picture without having the colors run together. I will show them the way a warm colored seahorse would look, and a cool colored sea horse. After painting the seahorse and the objects in the background, the last step will be the ocean water. Get your salt ready because you want to sprinkle it on before it dries! This part really creates a cool texture and completes it!
Learning Goals
Students will learn step-by-step instructions on how to draw a seahorse. They will also design their own background to show distance through overlapping. We will discuss warm and cool colors and students will decide if they would like their seahorse to stand out or blend in. Students will learn how to use salt to create a unique texture when placed on top of wet watercolor paint.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there! My name is Jessica Campbell and I was born to be an art teacher!
I mainly teach lessons that are a combination of drawing and watercolor. I have a degree in Art Education from SUNY New Paltz, and have been teaching art since 2002.
Not only have I taught in both public and private classrooms, but I also have run a successful art camp every summer for the past 15 years. At this point in my career, I have taught over 10,000 students! I am excited to work with even more in this virtual platform, especially now that my summer camps have been cancelled.
My teaching philosophy is all about building confidence in my students. I have developed lessons that are designed to be simple, yet very successful. We work step by step to create amazing projects that families will want to display. When a child feels that their work is valued, it definitely encourages them to take even more risks and achieve greater things!
I live in Tampa, Florida with my husband, two kids and a dog named Bacon! I love dressing up in silly costumes and running half marathons (at the same time!) Hope to meet you soon!
