US Grade 9 - 11
Special Note/Pre-Requisite: This course is designed as an accompanying course to my Romeo and Juliet Play Study which can be found in a link at the bottom of this description. While you do not need to have taken my course to do this essay, students will need to have read the play before attending class! If you have questions about this, please let me know! Through this course, students will write an argumentative essay that analyzes Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, a famous play that has inspired love stories over hundreds of years. It is the story of two young lovers whose families are fighting a bloody feud that strikes at the heartstrings of people of all generations. Students will have the option to choose a prompt of their choice because I believe that students should have the opportunity to have a personalized learning experience when writing essays. Prompts will be provided for students at the beginning of our first class together. As we continue through the course, students will receive lessons on essay writing (see the list below for lesson topics) and they will have the chance to write in class with independent writing time. Students will receive live feedback and written feedback on their essays each class. Students can expect to receive both verbal and written feedback in class as students get individualized time working one-on-one with the teacher. They can also expect to receive written feedback before each class on their essays so that they have the opportunity to edit their work and to develop their arguments further. Session One: - Welcome and Introduction - Essay Prompt Selection - Elements of an Argumentative Essay - Pre-Writing and Outline Set-Up - Thesis Statement Development Session Two: - Feedback Review and Editing - Introductions and Hooks - Topic Sentences Born of Thesis Statements - Textual Evidence - Independent Writing Time Session Three: - Feedback Review and Editing - Continuation of the Previous Week - MLA Citation of Evidence - Warrants/Explanations - Independent Writing Time Session Four: - Feedback Review and Editing - Transitions - Conclusions - Call-to-Actions - Independent Writing Time - Final Drafts If reading Romeo and Juliet in a class setting is something that you would like to participate in before completing this essay course, please check out this link to my live, multi-day course on the play! - https://outschool.com/classes/romeo-and-juliet-a-shakespearean-play-novel-study-of-romance-and-tragedy-FgcPqCYI?usid=l0R3fRwf&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link
