Are you ready to learn how to be a rockstar reader?!? Come join me for this 4 week class all about story elements!!! Each week, we will be reading a different book written by Kevin Henkes. The publisher, Harper-Collins, has given special permission for teachers to read their story via digital streaming. Weekly Schedule: Week 1 (Week of Nov 8): Chrysanthemum Week 2 (Week of Nov 15): Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse **NO CLASSES WEEK OF THANKSGIVING (11/21-11/28)** Week 3 (Week of Nov 29): Owen Week 4 (Week of Dec 6 [Tuesday Class], Week of Dec 13 [Monday class]: Wemberly Worried Lesson Outline: Each week, we will focus on a different story element or reading comprehension strategy. We will practice retelling, finding the setting of the story, character analysis, text to self connections, and problem/solution. Before reading our story, we will discuss the focus skill of the week and what it means. The teacher will read the book on display so students can follow along for reading support. If you have this book at home, it is encouraged that the student brings it to class so they can follow along with the teacher! While reading the story, students will be listening for the target skill of the week. After reading the story, we will go in depth about the focus skill. Each week, I will have a recording sheet where we will record our findings. For example, if the week’s skill is beginning, middle, and end, we will write together on a provided handout. Each week, I will also allow the students to draw a picture from the story if time allows. I may tell them what I would like for them to draw (maybe a particular scene from the story), or it may be a free draw (their favorite part of the story). At the end of each class, we will answer trivia questions about the story to test their comprehension of each story.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of story elements and reading comprehension strategies: setting, character traits, problem/solution, story retelling, text to self connections, and more.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Callan, and I am so excited that you are here! I earned my Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus in Elementary Education from Texas A&M University. I am certified to teach early childhood through 6th grade in all subject areas. I also have an ESL certification (English as a Second Language) for grades K-6.
I taught 1st grade in the brick & mortar classroom for three years (all subject areas) before taking time off to travel for my husband's job. Being a classroom teacher allowed me to work with many different students with many different learning styles. I have taught students in small and large group settings, and I have learned many different techniques to create a safe, comfortable, and FUN learning environment. Since leaving the brick and mortar classroom, I have been looking for a way to get back to teaching, and I am so glad I came across Outschool! I hope that you will join me for one of my classes to say hello and to learn many fun things! See you there!!!
