In this class, we will focus on Pop/Rock musicals of the 80s decade. We will also focus on the musicians and artists that shaped the music of each era and how it informs the musicals. Students may also learn about dances and the artists of the area in order to know how to successfully prepare an audition for these types of musicals. Each student will select and prepare a pop/rock song of one of the eras and perform it in our last class. Some, but not all, musicals we'll explore include: *Footloose *Rock of Ages *School of Rock *Cats *The Wedding Singer We will also listen to artists of each era and each student will pick a pop/rock song to learn as an audition song for these musical types. Historical and cultural topics will also be touched on so that students may understand how music was shaped by the time period. Slides will be used with pictures of each artist and some of their more famous songs. Some video clips may be used to show different dances as well as clips from each of the shows. We will also have time for discussion of each show, musician, and/or historical significance.
Learning Goals
Students will have an understanding of different types of musicals as well as the cultural, historical, and musical context in which it takes place. They will also select and prepare a short pop/rock song to be shared with the group in our last class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there!
My name is Heather Statham or Ms. Heather!
I'm a performer and Vocal Coach in Atlanta, Georgia, and have been on stage my entire life and love everything about it!
As a Vocal Coach, I have helped students learn how to find the best music and material to showcase their talents from college auditions to reality shows to Carnegie Hall! I'm also a Certified Rock the Auditon coach which means I help Musical theatre students and performers learn how to authentically prepare for and perform in Pop/Rock musicals.
Over my years as a performer and educator, I love working with children in the theatre and cultivating their love and interest in all aspects of the art form. I believe that "play" and "exploration" are important to learning and I work to implement that in all of my classes.
Additionally, I am the vocalist and manager for the award-winning Atlanta band, ThunderGypsy, a tap dancer, a lover of all things Disney, and a Sorority House Mom.
I can't wait to share with you my love and passion and interest in all things Broadway, Disney, Dancing, and Music!
See you soon!
Ms. Heather
