Beginner Level
Over the course of 4 sessions, this class will strengthen students ability to read both fiction and nonfiction texts. Each day, we will focus on a different piece of reading. We will use research backed tools, steeped in the Science of Reading, to prepare students for 4th grade level reading. Ms. AJ uses a kind, supportive, and honest tone to support students as they build their comprehension skills and prepare for higher level reading.

Nonfiction - Main Idea, Key Details, and Nonfiction Text Features
Students will be introduced to 2 nonfiction reading pieces and given resources to determine the main idea and key details of the passage. We will explore text features for various pieces of nonfiction, and use all elements of the page to determine the author's main idea and supporting details.

Lesson 2:
Nonfiction - Text Structure
Students will extend their understanding of main idea and key details by exploring various nonfiction text structures and determining how different articles are organized. They will be introduce to cause/effect, problem/solution, compare/contrast, sequence, and descriptive nonfiction texts and play a series of games to practice passage analysis and synthesis.

Lesson 3:
Fiction - Plot elements
Students will explore narrative text structure and analyze how various stories use those elements to tell an engaging story.

Lesson 4:
Fiction - Character Analysis
Students will read a fictional story and play a number of games to explore character analysis including character traits, feelings, dialogue, and changes throughout a story.

I am an experienced educator - 8 years in public school classrooms, and another 5 years teaching art, theater, and music for various organizations. I hold a Masters of Science in Teaching & Learning and a Masters of Art in International Education Development from Columbia University. I am certified in K-5 elementary education and 6-12 social studies.
My teaching philosophy balances student success with student happiness. I hold all participants to high standards, but manage their needs with compassion and understanding. I value process-based learning where mistakes are celebrated as an important part of learning something new.
