Beginner Level
In this course, students will learn the foundations of public speaking. The topics that will be covered will be posture, delivery, preparation, talking points, eye contact, voice control, enunciation, diction, body language, tone, and knowing the audience. Students will also learn research-based strategies for effective public speaking skills. The class is structured to allow for deep collaboration, interaction and high engagement. My teaching style is to empower my students to engage in problem solving and reflective learning. I integrate the action words from Bloom's Taxonomy in my teaching curriculum (i.e., identify, explain, apply, analyze, evaluate and create) to help my class engage in critical thinking. The learners will have many opportunities to interact with my as well as their peers for deeper learning. I also strive to teach to different learning styles such as auditory, tactile and visionary to be inclusive. I will use slides, lecture, and group discussions to ensure the learning is rigorous, relevant, robust and fun.
Learning Goals
Students will learn research-based strategies for effective public speaking skills and how to write an effective speech. This will help them with diction, organization of thoughts and delivery. They will learn how to organize their thoughts and speak spontaneously. More specifically, they will learn how to find their own voice and communicate to various topics. By doing so, this course will be cross-curricular so students will also learn persuasive writing techniques that will enhance their speaking.
