Does your child struggle to remember sight words? Does your child try to sound it out, and then it just doesn't work because some sight words are undecodable? It can be very challenging and frustrating for some learners to learn "true" sight words - the ones that are truly undecodable and do not follow regular phonics patterns. Learning these sight words is a VERY important skill in order to become a good reader. In this class, I will teach your child these challenging sight words with a method that will actually STICK! I will use something different than just black and white words and lots of repetition. Right brain learners need a different strategy to help them learn sight words. The key to getting these tricky sight words to stick is to use a unique teaching process where we imbed meaning onto the sight word. This is done with color and pictures. After the learner "takes a picture" of the word word printed on it in picture form, they can later read the word in black and white. This is because they will "see" in their mind's eye the picture that gives them the name of the word. This method is very effective, but it does still require a few minutes of practice/review 5 days each week.. The pictures/words I will use in this class have been created by Dianne Craft and I have permission to use them in this class. This class has one long video. It begins with a time of teaching, where I will demonstrate the strategy for how to learn "right brain" sight words. Then, after the teaching time, I will share 20 undecodable "right brain" sight words embedded with pictures and share the sentence/story that goes with them. Since this is a self-paced class, you can feel free to watch the teaching part on one day, and then the rest of the video when you have time. I would recommend choosing 5 words a week to work on. I am including all 20 in one video, so you can pick and choose which ones you want to learn first. Or you may just choose to do the first 5 in week one and then the second 5 in week two, and so on. If your learner needs to learn all 20 of these words, then it will take you 4 weeks to learn all 20 words. If your child already knows some of these words, feel free to leave them out and choose words that your child doesn't know yet. And if your learner needs more than one week to learn some of the words, then please feel free to give your child more opportunity and time to learn the words before adding new ones. I have also included are some games to use for reviewing and practicing the sight words.

Hello!
I have been teaching on Outschool since 2022, and I am absolutely loving it! I love meeting children from all over the world and helping them learn how to read or helping them to grow in their reading abilities.
My professional background/educational experiences:
After graduating from high school, I attended Bible college and then went to university to get my Bachelor of Education degree. I was a substitute and term teacher for many years for a variety of grade levels. I homeschooled my own children for one wonderful year. And then I taught kindergarten in the public school system for 11 years.
While teaching kindergarten, I thought I knew how to teach children how to read, but it wasn't until I found Reading Simplified and took their amazing reading course, that I finally learned the scientific and proven way of how to teach children how to read! The Reading Simplified method works! I have been working with many children for the past 2 years and been amazed at how much and how quickly many of them improve in their reading!
I have also discovered that some children who struggle to learn how to read benefit from Right Brained Teaching Strategies. This past year I have been learning how to help these bright learners with strategies taught by Dianne Craft.
I am passionate about making an emotional connection with each child and making each child feel seen, heard, special and loved. I strive to be caring, kind and encouraging while teaching new concepts to young learners.
I am a mom to three beautiful adult daughters, 2 amazing son-in-laws and a Nana to the most precious little baby girl. I live in Manitoba (which is in Canada:) and I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, attending church and exploring the beautiful outdoors. My favorite activity of all is waterskiing and boating on the lake with my family. When I am not busy being active in the great outdoors, I love spending a quiet evening reading an engaging book beside my fireplace.
