This Phonemic Awareness Intervention small group is designed to help readers, who enjoy a small group setting, that may not be successful in areas such as blending sounds, finding syllables, substituting sounds, rhyming words, and spelling words by sounding them out yet. What is phonemic awareness? This term describes the ability to think about, identify, and use specific sounds in words. We can blend sounds, segment sounds, and even delete sounds from words to learn. What to expect during live meetings? We meet 2 days a week for 5 weeks. I am available outside of live meeting time for any questions. I also offer a tutoring time for this class if students prefer a one-on-one setting. I start live meetings with a short time for hellos/sharing. I find this time beneficial as it helps to get to know students and for students to learn about each other. This time also allows me to incorporate individual interests in the lessons which make the lessons more personalized and fun. The first class is used to get to know your student as a reader. After our introductions and phonemic awareness lesson, students complete a rhyming activity. I place students into breakout rooms to give each student private time to complete a verbal phonemic awareness assessment. The breakout room time varies with group size, but typically is 5 minutes per student (30 minutes at full group size). They will complete a verbal reading assessment, so I can see areas they may not be successful yet. In the second class, we complete a fun reading survey that tells me more about their reading interests. In the other sessions (3rd-9th), students and I complete a Heggerty Intervention lesson. These lessons are designed to have students blend sounds, segment sounds in words, delete and replace sounds. We use hand movements to have a hands-on and visual way to complete these activities. After, students read a decodable book with my guidance. I may also find different reading strategies would be more beneficial such as "I read, you read." I will send you feedback about the class in a message after class. Any time after reading will be used for practice of specific skills. The tenth class is used to celebrate your student's hard work! To keep student motivation toward reading, this celebration class is still related to reading with two fun options to choose from to complete fun reading activities including bringing your own book to class to share.
