Class Experience

Kids who have strong, connected relationships are more resilient because they have a support system to lean on during challenging times! How confident does your child feel about making quality friendships? What about handling those tricky social interactions?

In this engaging class, students will learn what makes for healthy, happy, and meaningful relationships with friends and family. They will identify qualities found in healthy relationships, as well as friendship deal-breakers. Students will learn helpful tips for navigating the more tricky social moments and unkind behavior of others, and discover their style of speaking up with a fun quiz. Even more, students will learn about the importance of asking for help when needed, and then accepting that support from the people they trust.

After this class, your child will feel excited for friendships and more confident about handling those tricky social problems.

This lesson is designed to be fun and informative, and taught through interactive discussion, games, and worksheets. Due to the activities and topic, it is requested that students turn their video camera on for class (it improves communication)!

Students will learn to:
1. Notice qualities of healthy relationships, such as trust, kindness, & forgiveness
2. Practice using a tool for greater self-awareness
3. Understand the common motives behind unkind behavior (tricky social interactions) and how to address it in a constructive way
4. Discover their own "speak-up style"
5. Identify who is in their support network & how to ask them for help

NOTE: This is the sixth class in my "Resilient Kids" series. Although each class is helpful on its own, the suggested order is below:
1. Resilient Kids Keep Cool
2. Resilient Kids Grow Gratitude
3. Resilient Kids Stop Stinkin' Thinkin'

5. Resilient Kids Problem Solve Like a CHAMP
6. Resilient Kids Have Standout Sidekicks
**If you are interested in enrolling in multiple classes, I offer the series at a bundled rate in my class, "Bounce Back Buddies"

Teacher expertise and credentials
I believe resilience is a critical trait for anyone working toward being the best they can be, and it is something that can be strengthened like a muscle. I am personally committed to helping build resilient kids, and ultimately resilient families, in my own community and beyond. I have a background as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. However, most of my work has been as a Resiliency Skills Trainer with a program out of UCLA Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior. In that position, I taught several skill-building workshops with groups of kids (ages 3-13) and adults. I also worked with families individually. I taught the skills of emotion regulation (including healthy thinking styles), communication, goal setting, and problem-solving.

I am excited to bring my background and personal style to Outschool so I can help you accomplish your goals. My approach to teaching resiliency skills with kids is especially unique because I focus on connecting with each child in a way that creates a FUN and ENGAGING learning environment! I can't wait to meet your child and begin learning together!
