We will begin with an introduction to word problems found in first grade. I will share reptile themed problems for the students to solve. We will look at using drawing, acting out, and a number line as strategies for solving problems. Students will have an opportunity to share their strategies. Students will demonstrate clear understanding by creating their own word problems. I will scaffold for learners by providing a model to follow or sentence frames as needed. I will extend learning, when needed, by challenging learners to use larger numbers and try to create problems where the change is unknown. The students will have an opportunity to solve each others problems. Students with an understanding of single digit addition and subtraction will benefit from this class.
