Class Experience

This course is designed to be taken once or multiple times.

The goal is to create a writing process that can be applied to any writing task. The tricks taught in the one time class can be replicated without returning from week to week.

However, a writing community can often provide structure and accountability. With that in mind, students may register as many times as they find it useful. The process will remain the same but the art projects and the prompts will change every week.

Students will bring art supplies (colored pencils or markers and plain paper is enough but they are free to bring paints or other items. Often I work in marker and watercolors). We begin by moving creative energy through a simple art task. The quality of the art is not important, but the projects are fun and can get the brain ready to create.

Next we will practice consciousness writing. In this strategy, students will be directed to write whatever is in their brains for a set amount of minutes. Don't know what to write? Write "I don't know what to write." This will get the brain moving in the direction of writing. The content is not important because we are practicing moving our writing brain. Students will not be asked to share this writing.

Finally, students will work with a prompt. After spending some time writing with the prompt, students can share their work. Examples are "Advice Columnist for a day" where students answer made up questions. Six word memoirs. Flash Fiction. Some will be specific and others opened ended.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Students will never be asked to share their consciousness writing. Should the content be concerning, I, nor any of the students, will have read or know what the student has written. Students will, however, be allowed to share their response to the prompts. Also, I would like to make it clear that I as a licensed teacher with the State of Colorado, I am a mandated reporter.
Supply List
Plain paper, art supplies, a notebook if students prefer to write by hand. Art supplies can include crayons, markers or colored pencils. Student may also want to use paint. It is their choice but they need art supplies that give choices of colors.
