Homework
Refining the essay is the homework! We can create an action plan to move forward, and I will gladly review student's work at least one time outside of the class time.Assessment
I have a rubric for students, and I always provide specific feedback and actionable steps. Feel free to grab the simplified rubric below, even if you don't take my class! Clarity & Organization- Does the essay have a logical flow? It could be chronological, or focused on specific narratives to represent your central idea, but it should not be choppy. Focus & Content- Does it address the audience with an appropriate tone? Does it fully flesh out a central theme and stay on topic? Could you explain the purpose of each paragraph and how it supports the central message. Creativity- Is the storyline interesting and compelling? Does it draw a reader in with a captivating hook? Do you take risks with your writing to help yourself stand out? Insight- Does the storyline provide insight into your personal character and your potential? Style- Is your writing sophisticated? Is your word choice strong and advanced? Grammar & Mechanics- Is it carefully proofed? Does it look nice on the page? Does it demonstrate advanced understanding of English mechanics? Did you follow the directions for layout and submission?Class Experience

What will be taught? In this one-time college essay tutoring course, we will dig into the ideas you already have, or the draft. I want to meet you where you are, but it's best to come with AT LEAST some topic ideas for your essay. Together we will focus on layout, revision, conciseness, or topic depending on the area of greatest need. I want you to walk away with a CLEAR strategy to improve or begin your essay. What topics will you cover? We will cover choosing impactful topics, creating engaging openings, and revising for clarity and impact. You'll also receive guidance on how to inject your unique voice into your essays. How is your class structured? The class is loosely structured and entirely personal. I have a bank of tools and a deep understanding of what admissions are looking for. You'll have the opportunity to work on the essay or plan you have already in a shared document. How will you teach? We will dig right into the sample you bring with you. We may rephrase particular sentences, comb through looking for out of sync ideas, or narrow the focus of your essay to a single story through a full rewrite. I have great strategies for brainstorming ideas, like listing what you're proud of and want colleges to know about you. I have sample essays to read through and evaluate, so you can use that same lens to look at your own work. I have a step by step revision process for of each part of the essay to improve the flow. I have practice activities to give yourself a more powerful, confident voice. It depends what you need, but I got you! What's your teaching style? My teaching style is interactive and deeply supportive. It requires active participation. Your essay is a personal narrative, but connecting with me is easy! I'm confidence building. I believe all young people are capable of changing the world and achieving their dreams, and I'm deeply committed to your success. I don't powerpoint. It's not bells and whistles. It's my knowledge and expertise at work for you 1:1. Any required experience or knowledge learners need? At minimum, you need 2-3 story ideas to bring with you. A college essay should be very focused on a single example from your life that reveals something about you, something that numerical data does not show. Anything from brainstormed ideas to a complete essay is required to come to my session. It's hard to start from zero.
