Class Experience

In this one-time drawing course, students will learn to sketch a realistic portrait of a chinchilla (full body), using pencil.

What will students learn?

1. Students will learn techniques to sketch a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of a chinchilla (full body), using pencil.
2. Students will learn techniques to draw realistic shadows, using pencils and blending tools.
3. Students will learn techniques to draw realistic highlights, using pencils, erasers, and blending tools.
4. Students will learn techniques to draw smooth fur, using pencils, erasers, and blending tools.
5. Students will learn techniques to draw from a real photo using a provided reference photo.
6. Students will learn a few facts about chinchillas.

I will demonstrate each step for students and have students complete that step along with me. My classroom is a calm, fun, and creative space where discussion between teacher and students is encouraged. I strive for my classroom to be a positive environment for students to learn from each other, ask questions, and make lasting friendships. I ask students questions throughout the lesson to check for student understanding.

Students who enroll in this class should have basic drawing skills, like drawing and manipulating shapes with a pencil. Students do not need a lot of prior realistic drawing experience to be successful in this class.

Welcome to my teacher page! My name is Torri McCarrey, and I am very passionate about teaching visual arts and core curriculum. My core curriculum courses often use an art integration approach to learning (e.g., drawing your own monster using adjectives). I also teach realistic animal drawing, landscape painting, holiday themed art, and more! I am a certified teacher with two Bachelor of Science Degrees in teaching, Elementary Education (kindergarten through sixth grade) and Early Childhood Education (pre-kindergarten through third grade). I have also drawn realistic and quirky animal portraits for nearly ten years. My values and philosophy of teaching include providing students with a calm and creative learning environment that provides the opportunity for hands-on learning experiences through art integration. I am also an avid animal lover, gardener, and aspiring illustrator and author, (I am currently working towards publishing my first children’s picture book). If you would like to email me, I try to respond within twenty-four hours, Monday through Friday. Thank you for your time and I look forward to working with you!
