Class Experience

Welcome to <Real Coding>! Here we learn basic literacy of writing (with a pencil), typing (with a keyboard), logic and idea organization (with HTML/JavaScript code). All of this is done for a purpose with the reward of a functional game to play!

These games are retro or old-style games that you can easily open in any web browser like Chrome or Edge.

Who is this class for?
This course is for curious students ages 6–9. Often these students do not like practicing for the sole purpose of writing or reading. They need something more. That something is often a sense of creation and inventiveness. That's what I give, a sense of accomplishment that fills children's desires to invent something that works. While they do this, they learn the basic skills of writing, reading and concepts of variables.

What to expect in each class
In this class, I teach penmanship, proper finger placement for typing, the concepts of HTML tags, logic, variable assignment, and idea organization. In combination, it is a great way for students to learn important basic literacy skills through coding fun games.

How a class progresses:
1. Warm greeting by name
2. Writing and Penmanship - I upload a worksheet with key snippets of code to practice writing with a pencil. (You will need to print these pages. Alternatively, you can get the workbooks on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3A2thCh)
3. Typing - I provide an HTML file to type in the same code that we practiced writing. For this, we use the free program named Caret (Chromebook, Mac, PC).
4. Load your game and play - Open your game file (GameName.html)
5. Show-and-tell about modifications we made to our game like colors, speed, gravity, emojis, shapes, etc.

What you need to set up:
1. Computer: PC, Mac or Chromebook
2. Program: Notepad (PC), Text Edit (Mac) or Caret (Chromebook, Mac, PC)
3. Folder to save your games in
4. Pencil & Printed pages

Rationale:
Most writing and reading practice is for the sole purpose of writing or reading. The type of coding we do in this class gives a very tangible and immediate reward for writing and reading. The game is the reward! The students are intently motivated to have their game work. Since we help each other troubleshoot errors, this leads to the basis of team-based learning which is such a critical skill to learn.

Schedule:

Parental Guidance
Parents should help children setup the program called Caret. It is a text editor like Notepad or Text Edit. We use it to edit our code. You don't need to login or create an account. It is a standalone program. Please simply help your child open it.
Supply List
I authored the <Real Coding> book series that we use in class so I upload the PDF pages for you to print each week. Alternatively, you can purchase the workbooks on the Amazon store of your country: https://amzn.to/3A2thCh

What you need to set up:
1. Computer: PC, Mac or Chromebook
2. Program: Caret (Chromebook, Mac, PC)
Caret is a stand-alone app like Notepad or Text Edit. It is super simple and has line numbers to help us code. It does not require a login. Find it here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/caret/fljalecfjciodhpcledpamjachpmelml?hl=en

Hi! I’m Andrew Semotiuk and my students call me Dr. Drew. I teach creative, hands-on classes that help kids express themselves through storytelling, expressive drawing, and bookmaking. Whether we’re designing characters or binding our own storybooks, I love guiding learners through the process of turning their ideas into something real they can be proud of.

I’ve taught writing and storytelling to students from elementary to college level, and I’ve written many of my own storybooks, chapter books, and articles along the way. I bring both structure and imagination to my classes, helping learners build skills while having fun.

I believe kids thrive when they feel seen, heard, and encouraged. My teaching style is positive and community-based—every child has something valuable to share, and I make space for that in every class.

At home, I’m a dad of three imaginative kids, and some of our best ideas have come from stories told by the campfire or during our attachment circle. I can’t wait to hear what your learner dreams up next!
