Class Experience

This is as much a drawing class as it is a creative thinking class! Both are very important skills.

In this class we will play 5 or MORE timed drawing games! Each game is timed to be between 2-5 min each, so we only have a few minutes per drawing. This encourages quick thinking, simple drawings, and this means that we can fit lots of drawing into a single class. Woohoo!

Learners will start their drawings when the timer starts and end when the timer goes off. I will be drawing too but my drawings will be done off camera so that I don't influence anyone's creative ideas. When the time is up, we will share our work by holding the paper up to camera. I recommend drawing with a dark drawing tool like a dark pencil or a pen so art shows up on camera easily. Learners can also post their drawings to the classroom after class is over.

Before each game I will do an example to show how it works. After a quick explanation we will start! This class moves quickly so learners who need to take a washroom break may miss a game. I ask that everyone be on time and come ready to draw!

Here are the different games we will be playing in class.

1) Finish this: We start with a random shape we all turn it into a drawing. We will likely play this game a few times.

2) Draw that Dino: Randomly selected prehistoric animals and we draw what we think it may look like.

3) Cartoon storytelling challenge: I pick some words and we all draw a visual story using the prompts.

4) Draw the word: Draw ____ as many ways as you can.

Every classes games will be exactly the same, but the game prompts will be unique and mostly learner generated. This means that no 2 classes will ever be exactly the same even though the games are the same. Learners who choose to enrol multiple times will get to play the same games but with totally new prompts so each class experience will be different, creatively.

This is a fun class for all ages.
No drawing skills are required, but more experienced artists will likely have more success with the games. That being said, learner with no art experience can totally succeed at these games because the creativity part is just as important as the drawing part.
Learning Goals
Learners will have fun with art, and get lots of experience with creative thinking, visual problem solving and drawing.

I recommend taking this class multiple times for the best result.

I love to teach art, and specialize in drawing (wide variety of styles and techniques), procreate, watercolour, and acrylic painting. When I teach, I like to lead by example. This means that I draw, paint and create with my students. Throughout class I make myself available for questions, assistance and feedback.

I’ve been teaching art for over 5 years, and I have been creating art professionally since 2011. I have illustrated marketing materials for Denny’s, Newman’s Own, Duane Reade, Discovery Children’s Museum, The Mendes Foundation and other clients.

I also have extensive experience in advertising. I’ve been working as an art director (now creative director) for over 17 years. I worked in New York City for 10 years, Cambodia for one, and I currently work remotely out of my home office in Canada. In my advertising career I've made TV commercials, print campaigns, radio spots, online ads, videos and billboards (even some in Time Square.) I love thinking of cool ideas and bringing them to life. I am excited to share this skill with my students.

I believe that art is more than an applicable workplace skill. Art is a form of healthy self-expression and personal reflection. I also believe that art teaches the importance of patience and persistence. It is an education for the mind and soul.

For me, art is meditative. I own dozens of sketchbooks filled with drawings I’ve done throughout the years. Many pages contains a memory, emotion, thought or experience. As a mother, I find additional inspiration through my daughter and new son.

Art is everywhere, if you look for it. Children especially have a gift for finding beauty in the world. I hope to harness this gift so every child in my class can find their own unique, artistic voice.
