Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
This class is for your learner. I will want to understand their strengths and needs in literacy & what motivates them. I will use this information to target those needs as efficiently as possible while building a relationship with your child and making the process of learning a positive experience for them. As they make systematic progress they will build confidence and make greater overall academic gains.

Spelling is one of the mechanics of writing that can really hold learners back from enjoying and succeeding at writing, as well as from overall academic progress. With systematic intervention, or sometimes just a little extra attention to this all children can make progress. Early help with spelling will enable learners to progress in all subjects that require writing.

I also love to teach beginning and early reading and writing; making sure children build a strong foundation for all future learning. Students thrive when they're taught these skills in a way that honors their individual abilities and personalities and provides fun and meaning as they learn the reading/writing code.

I will work with your reluctant, or eager young writer. Some areas I'm currently addressing or have addressed on Outschool include:
 building confidence in writing,
 increasing motivation for writing,
 letters/handwriting,
word work (phonemes, graphemes, orthographic mapping, affixes, word families,
    syllable types),
sentences (what makes a sentence, punctuation, basic parts of a sentence, sentence
    expansion and variation),
paragraphs (what makes a paragraph, paragraph structure and organization, parts of a
    paragraph, different kinds of paragraphs),
writing purpose, and audience,
parts of the writing process, and
written responses to reading.

Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or time requests. I have worked with learners with quite diverse needs in the past including students with no and low vision, intellectual delays, dyslexia, giftedness, ASD, and a few with ADHD.

Depending on your learner's needs, and how quickly you hope for them to progress, please consider my 40 and 50-minute classes. This 30-minute class works well for the youngest learners and for those who need targeted practice in one specific area. Learners wanting help with reading and writing, and those working at higher levels may benefit from a longer time in class.

This class also works well for learners who come multiple days per week. If your child needs significant help with beginning-level literacy, higher frequency lessons (2-3 times per week) will enable them to build their confidence and skills more quickly.

Any information you can provide before our first session will help make the most of our first class. A sample of your child's writing if writing or spelling are areas of need will be very helpful for planning. If your learner has any special needs for which I should plan, please let me know. If I have received no prior information, our first class may be mostly assessment and learning about your child so that I provide the best possible learning experience going forward.
Learning Goals

Students with special needs are welcome. I have a degree in Special Education and experience working with diverse learners. Please indicate your learners special needs when signing up. Thank you!
Supply List
This will vary but students should bring pencil and paper to class if their goals include writing or spelling. They are welcome to bring a "show & tell" item that shows their personality to our first class.
There may be items for printing at home, but we can work around this if you would prefer.
Visual access to a learner's work is very helpful.
