Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Why do some student seem to naturally love reading and writing and others don't? There are many reasons. Sometimes students get discouraged early on by classes that didn't fully meet their needs and lose confidence along the way. Sometimes students are bored by topics and exercises that seem irrelevant and useless. I take it as my personal challenge to get to know each students as an individual and offer the support they may have missed. I also work with each student to find topics and activities that motivate and inspire them.

I teach students writing skills in 4 key areas (mechanics, organization, content, and overall effectiveness).
I teach reading fluency and comprehension, with a focus on non-fiction reading. My aim is to help students master reading and writing skills that will make them successful communicators in all aspects of their lives.

One unique feature of my classes is how I maintain a sense of momentum and continuity with my long term students by offering reading and writing challenges that I co-create with my students. These challenges connect to themes that are interesting to students, giving them a good sense of agency and ownership over the lessons. I also incorporate digital escape rooms from time to time and use 'Canva' to incorporate graphic design elements into student writing projects.

My approach to teaching ELA is somewhat unique and may be a good match for students who have not thrived with a more traditional approach. This approach is informed by my experience as a certified Canadian Language Benchmark Assessor, English for Specific Purposes Teacher, and Literacy Resource Teacher.

Please reach out with any questions or comments! I hope to meet your learner in class.
