Assessment
I'm always assessing students, informally, as we work on reading. If they look back at the class recordings, there will be corrections as they read. I will also do an update regularly so that you know what's going on with your child and what they could keep working on. I will review with the student important goals each week.Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
Based on assessing their current ability, I will use my lessons, and/or other lessons to target those areas. Students who are beyond the foundations of reading levels, which are usually students in grades 3 and above could also bring a book they're reading in school if desired, so I can help them with fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, etc......and their homework related to that text. That's up to the parent. As we continue on, we will be working on any skills they may need from those foundational building blocks......or the higher level areas if they're above the foundations of reading. For students who are in the foundations of reading level though, we will be doing skill work based on what they specifically need, during our classes. Outschool Note: Any books a student brings to class must follow Outschool's guidelines so please make sure they are unbiased, secular, inclusive, and represent diverse viewpoints fairly and accurately. For more information, please refer to Outschool's guidelines. We would then work mostly on reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills to reinforce what they've learned so we can strengthen them so they will be reading for what they're asked to do in 4th-12th grade, and beyond. Although they touch on things briefly, like the main idea, supporting details, etc....before 4th grade, it accelerates greatly in all the nonfiction texts they will read as they get into 4th grade and higher. For new bookings, it would be helpful if you could send me a message, before the day of our first class, letting me know about your goals are for your child (reading comprehension, learning to read/get better at reading, learning the alphabet, etc...) and the level they are at already (above grade level...on level....below level, etc...). If you really want to book them the same day as their first class, I can get appropriate materials together to make that happen but....I would recommend a few hours' warning. In this individual class, the student will practice reading skills with the teacher. These skills will be covered during the course of the classes: ✱vocabulary ✱author's purpose ✱genre studies ✱making connections ✱characters and character traits ✱sequencing ✱problem/solution ✱summarizing ✱questioning ✱plot development ✱cause/effect ✱making predictions ✱plot (beginning, middle, end) ✱comparing fiction and nonfiction ✱context clues ✱drawing conclusions ✱following directions ✱getting the main idea Order of the weekly topics of study. Topics will recycle around 1. * Using context clues 2 * Getting the Main Idea: 3. * Following Directions 4.* Drawing Conclusions
Learning Goals
The student will gain confidence in all areas of reading especially in reading comprehension through these activities and instruction. My goal is to encourage each student and strengthen his or her interest and ability in all the areas of reading!

This fall marks my 51st anniversary as an elementary teacher. I have been teaching English, reading, and vocabulary for the past ten years since my retirement. I spent eight years as a principal but my heart belongs in the classroom teaching children. I feel I bring a broad range of experience with children, parents, and educational materials to the online classroom. As a retired teacher of 33 years, I have taught reading for grades kindergarten, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth in a public classroom. I am also certified as a gifted educator in grades 1-8. I feel excited and comfortable to be sharing this knowledge with students. I truly feel if the student is interested, and will complete the work, this class will make a huge difference in the life of the student! It just may be a game changer! Let's get excited about learning and have fun together!
