US Grade 1 - 3
Beginner Level
In this class, your child will learn to read and spell words using the digraph -ck with the short a, short i, and short o sound. I will use the Orton Gillingham approach in order to help the concept “stick.” This means your child will see it (visual), hear it (auditory), and move with it (kinesthetic). Students are asked to skywrite, use arm tapping, write on textured material (see class supply list), and use other multisensory activities to help reinforce this concept. I will use a keyword and picture to introduce the digraph -ck. These visuals will help your child remember the letter-sound relationship of the digraph -ck. This class is a good fit if your child has an understanding of the short sound of the vowel ‘a (apple)’, the short sound of the vowel ‘i (if)’, the short sound of the vowel 'o (off)', and the following consonants: b, c, d, f, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, r, s, t, and z. Learners will leave this class feeling valued and successful! The Orton-Gillingham approach was developed to help struggling readers and spellers by explicitly teaching the connections between letters and sounds. If your child is a struggling reader or speller or has been diagnosed with dyslexia this would be a very beneficial class. Supply List -Attached Printable (Available 24hrs before the class) -Any color Marker -Textured materials to use for finger tracing *only need 1 (sandpaper; velvet, corduroy, or suede material; scouring side of sponge, plastic grid sheet, or sand/rice in a tray.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Welcome! My name is Ms. Kathi, and I am thrilled to begin this journey with you. I have over 13 years of experience teaching and tutoring students, and my passion lies in helping them navigate the English language. Seeing a child gain confidence as they progress in their understanding of our unique language is one of my greatest joys. I specialize in teaching phonics, morphology, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension using a direct, multi-sensory approach. While every child's journey to becoming a reader is unique, there are specific components that struggling readers and dyslexic learners need to help them achieve success.
In my class, I encourage students to take risks and celebrate asking questions, as all great learning begins with curiosity. It is my privilege and honor to join your child on this journey. When not teaching, you can find me dancing, swimming, hiking, and enjoying the beach with my poodle, Darbee.
