Reading is a vital life skills that requires review and practice. In this course, students in 5th through 8th grade review reading skills, strategies and more for fiction and nonfiction texts. Meant for struggling readers, or those who need some additional support (dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, learning disabilities, language disorders), the instructor, a certified Reading Specialist, will guide students with: *Reading comprehension *Main idea *Author's purpose *Plot structure *Characterization (direct and indirect) *Context clues *Theme *Main idea and details *Genre *Compare & Contrast Each class will focus on a different reading related topic. The class is divided into two parts: lesson and practice. Lesson: While watching/listening to a PowerPoint lesson, students will fill out a guided note sheet then play Blooket based on the lesson. Practice: Students will participate in group activities to practice the lesson information. Activities include but are not limited to: online games, Blooket, Kahoot!, YouTube videos, reading passages, etc. Week 6- 2/7/24 Topic: Tips for Effective Reading Lesson: PowerPoint lesson, guided notes, Blooket game Practice: Reading plan activity Week 7- 2/14/24 Topic: Plot Lesson: PowerPoint lesson, guided notes, Blooket game Practice: Fairy tale plot practice Week 8- 2/21/24 Topic: Characterization Lesson: PowerPoint lesson, guided notes, Blooket game Practice: Create character activity Week 9- 2/28/24 Topic: Main Idea and Details Lesson: PowerPoint lesson, guided notes, Blooket game Practice: Read and highlight practice passage
Learning Goals
*Students will review reading skills and strategies by viewing PowerPoint lessons, completing guided notes and playing a Blooket game.
*Students will practice reading skills and strategies by participating in discussions, playing online games, and reading short passages.

Parental Guidance
Students will use Blooket, but will not require an account.
Supply List
Teacher will provide guided notes and reading passages (written by instructor). Students will need pen/pencil.
