In this one-time rhyming class, I will lead learners through activities and games to help strengthen their ability to hear and produce rhyming words. Rhyming is an important part of developing phonological awareness for young learners on their way to becoming confident readers. While students are having fun playing games and completing rhyming activities, important literacy work is taking place! Through rhyme, students begin to recognize word families (mat, cat, sat, hat, rat) while also listening to word parts and noticing the different sounds that make up a word. I use fun, bright slides, props, interactive elements, and games to keep young learners engaged and having fun in class! The games and activities in this class are designed to help students: 1. Understand that rhyming words have the same ending sound 2. Listen to spoken words (with picture/prop support) and identify words that rhyme 3. Differentiate between words that rhyme and words that do not rhyme 4. Produce rhyming words
Learning Goals
Students can recognize and produce rhyming words.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Queen's University
I have a BA in Education from Queen's University and a reading endorsement from Drake University. I have worked as a reading interventionist with the Des Moines Public School District. My role as a reading interventionist was to strengthen learners' proficiency in reading by offering small group instruction covering a specific area of the five pillars of literacy (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension). I love helping students find confidence and enjoyment in reading by creating fun, yet targeted, reading lessons that will give learner's a solid foundation of literacy skills.
