In this one-time class, I will lead learners through games and activities to help them hear and identify beginning sounds both orally and in written form! Identifying the beginning sound in a word prepares young learners for writing and decoding words when they begin to read and write unfamiliar words. Fun props, slides, and interactive games will keep your learner engaged and having fun while practicing this important literacy skill! The games and activities in this lesson are designed to help students: 1. Hear and identify the beginning sound in an orally produced word 2. See an object or picture and produce the beginning sound of that object/picture 3. Look at written words and produce the beginning sound by noticing the first letter in the word 4. Differentiate between words with similar or different beginning sounds **For this class, it is helpful for the learner to know most of the alphabet letters and sounds**
Learning Goals
Students will isolate and pronounce the initial sounds in words
Students will distinguish between similarly spelled words by identifying the sounds of the letters that differ (emphasis will be on differing beginning sounds)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Queen's University
I have a BA in Education from Queen's University and a reading endorsement from Drake University. I have worked as a reading interventionist with the Des Moines Public School District. My role as a reading interventionist was to strengthen learners' proficiency in reading by offering small group instruction covering a specific area of the five pillars of literacy (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension). I love helping students find confidence and enjoyment in reading by creating fun, yet targeted, reading lessons that will give learner's a solid foundation of literacy skills.
