In this course, students will learn the essential skills to read and write based on the Orton Gillingham method. To begin the course, students will learn the proper sounds for all short vowels and consonants. As the course progresses, students will be introduced to diagraphs (SH, CH, TH, PH, and CK). Students will improve their phonemic awareness as they learn how to break apart words into individual phonemes as well as how to reconstruct the words. Focus for the course will be on CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant). Students will practice both reading and writing CVC words, in-class and at home. Time permitting we will begin to work on short phrases and sentences. Classwork is designed to be interactive and multi-sensory. For example we may do jump jacks to the word - ship. Students will be informally assessed throughout class by teacher observation. Students will be formally assessed by completing a pre-test phonemenic awareness assessment week 1 and another one week 5 to see progress. This course is appropriate for all learners including students with reading based language disabilities.

I am an associate of the Orton Gillingham Academy for Practitioners and Educators and have a Masters Degree in Literacy from the University of Georgia. Over the past 10 years, I have been teaching and tutoring students in pre-K through 6th grade. Most recently I held the position of Literacy Specialist for a top private elementary school in Atlanta Georgia. I am currently a tutor for students in pre-K through 8th grade.
I also have a 3 year old daughter and a 5 year old son.
