Intermediate Level
Reading comprehension is complex. Things that can make it hard are text difficulty, the level of prior knowledge about the topic, vocabulary, reading skills, motivation, mindset, and so much more. It is natural for kids to struggle. The brain is like a muscle that must be developed over time to be made stronger. We will use IXL, an online app, that has diagnostic tools to help us focus on what skills your child needs. IXL can target a variety of English / Language Arts skills or topics, such as using proper punctuation and grammar (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.), identifying the main ideas or themes, making inferences, distinguishing between facts and opinions, etc. Parents will sign up for a monthly or yearly membership to IXL for use with their child. While there are opportunities for the child to be assigned homework using the app, success is often related to monitoring the child while they work on the app to understand what they know and what they don't know. Mini lessons on skills can be addressed as the child works through the app. My role is to play a variety of roles, depending upon your child's needs. I may need to teach, train, coach, guide, motivate, or just be a support. While your child works through questions on the app, I will be working along side your child to observe, give feedback, and provide lessons as needed. I find coaching students is a very effective tool to help a child accelerate faster and make more progress. Your child will share his/her screen as she works through the IXL material. The parent will pre-register for the app prior to class, paying either the monthly or yearly fee, and choosing the topics that you wish to cover.
Learning Goals
The goal is to help your child develop the reading comprehension and thinking skills needed to become a better independent reader.
Build your child's confidence and motivation.

Pre-Requisites
Your child should be a capable reader -able to sound out words, have a wide basic sight vocabulary to easily read and pronounce a wide variety of words, and is ready to target more advanced skills. He/ She will take an IXL diagnostic test.
